Framingham Sonic Skin Study

WELCOME TO YEAR 3 OF THE FRAMINGHAM SONIC SKIN STUDY!

Sonic logoThe SONIC project is designed to help us discover ways to protect families from skin damage in the sun and about factors that impact the risk for melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. The project brings together the Framingham School System and researchers at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Boston University in a National Institutes of Health funded five-year project.

During routine scoliosis screening, fifth graders had photographs of their backs and faces to look for moles. A genetic screening test was conducted for one specific gene that may be implicated in mole changes and melanoma in May ’05. The students and their parents will fill out questionnaires again this fall to let us know about sun exposure and sun protection practices from the past summer. The information from these surveys will go a long way toward figuring reasons for mole changes in our children and help scientists plan for ways to improve education for families regarding sun protection.
