Reducing Your Schedule from Full-Time to Part-Time?

A change in your employment status from full-time to part-time is considered a Life or Career Event.  Depending on how your percent time changes, certain benefits may be affected as summarized below.

Coverage ends at end of the month in which schedule is reduced; COBRA offered

Coverage ends on the date your schedule reduces to part-time


BU Retirement Plan


University contributions will continue as a percentage of your reduced and eligible pay regardless of the percent time you are working.


Supplemental Retirement & Savings Plan


Contributions will continue as a percentage of your reduced and eligible pay regardless of the percent time you are working.


Flexible Spending Accounts


Participation continues unchanged regardless of the percent time you are working.


Tuition Remission


Coverage ends at the end of the semester in which you reduce to part-time.

Certain benefit plans may continue if you reduce to less than 100% of a full-time schedule, as described above. If you wish to discontinue or suspend your participation in any of these plans, you will need to request the change through Employee Self Service at BUworks Central by selecting the option “Manage my Benefits – Life or Career Events”. Re-enrollment in these plans is possible when you return to eligible status, as long as you contact Human Resources and enroll within 30 days from the date you return to eligible status.
