Creating Diverse Environment

A diversity of clinicians, staff, faculty, students, and trainees creates an environment that leads both to excellence and personal wellbeing. Effectively managed diversity creates a culture and climate that fosters intellectual development, academic discourse, patient care, research, and personal satisfaction.

Creating and maintaining a diverse environment takes thoughtful preparation and ongoing work.  There are valuable resources at the Medical Campus to aid the process of creating and enhancing a diverse employee, faculty and trainee population.  The Boston University School of Medicine Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs serves as a proponent for diversity and cultural competence among students, faculty, and staff. The Office of Diversity partners with departmental leaders to develop model recruitment and retention strategies for curriculum, staff, and faculty development.  It sponsors activities open to both BU and BMC employees and is a central clearing house for diversity activities on the medical campus.  Additional Boston Medical Center resources around creating and enhancing diversity includes the Minority Physician Recruitment Program.


When contemplating diversity and inclusion at work, how would you answer the following questions?

There are many activities and organizations on the Medical Campus highlighting diversity and adding color to our rich tapestry of multiculturalism. Below are a few suggestions to help you become an active participant and to facilitate your appreciation of the differences and contributions everyone makes in our community.

  • Participate in activities sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
  • Attend panel discussions and social events addressing a variety of diversity-related topics.
  • Contact representatives of various organizations on campus including those related to sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and other cultural and ethnic interests.
  • Visit the Office of Diversity and Multicultural’s website to obtain information regarding programs, activities and potential mentors
