This training program, which began in 1975, provides postdoctoral trainees, with an M.D. or Ph.D., strong \u00a0multidisciplinary training enabling them to pursue scientific careers in cardiovascular science. \u00a0Trainees accepted into the program, \u00a0must commit two or three years to the program which contains 7 key elements:
\n1) a carefully planned and mentored research project under the direction of an established NIH-funded investigator;
\n2) development of grant writing skills;
\n3) annual presentation at a \u201cWork-in-Progress\u201d seminar series attended by the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute faculty and staff;
\n4) assessment of a trainees progress both by the mentor (ongoing) and by senior committee members during their annual presentation;
\n5) development of paper writing skills and a scientific journal internship to emphasize the key requirements to ready publications for high-impact journals; and a journal club that encompasses basic, translational, and clinical articles;
\n6) a \u201cBiostatistics** for Basic Science\u201d curriculum \u00a0designed to provide fundamental understanding of research design and analysis; and
\n7) a mentorship program that fosters career development.<\/p>\n
The training program is centered in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute at the Boston University Medical Campus and is made up of multidisciplinary faculty from the Departments of Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Physiology, and Pharmacology. Research areas represented by the faculty include biochemistry, physiology, immunology, inflammation, vascular biology, hypertensions, genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolism, and cardiomyocyte biology. \u00a0Trainees completing the program \u00a0will be equipped with the necessary tools to ask relevant questions, conduct original research, and secure independent funding.<\/p>\n
