Condit, Ph.D.<\/a> from the University of Florida \u00a0is presenting a seminar entitled, &#8220;Structure and Assembly of the Poxvirus Virion&#8221; on Monday, September 17, at 12:00 noon in L504 as part of the Microbiology-Infectious Diseases Seminar Series.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>This Week in Virology (TWiV#200)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TWiV is a podcast \u2013 or netcast, as some prefer to call them, since you don\u2019t need an iPod to listen \u2013 about viruses. \u00a0It was begun in September 2008 by Vincent Racaniello and Dick Despommier, two science Professors at Columbia University Medical Center. \u00a0Their goal was to have an informal yet informative conversation about viruses which would be accessible to everyone, no matter what their science background. \u00a0Alan Dove, a science writer, Rich Condit, a poxvirologist and Kathy Spindler, an adenovirologist, joined the team and are regular contributors.<\/p>\n<p>The 200<sup>th<\/sup> edition of TWiV will be filmed in \u00a0NEIDL and will be available for download from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twiv.tv\/\">www.twiv.tv<\/a> Sunday 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Septemember 2012.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions for the panel you can send them to Vincent Racaniello at <a href=\"mailto:twiv@twiv.tv\">twiv@twiv.tv<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We see this as a great opportunity to showcase the benefits NEIDL brings to BU, Boston and the wider scientific community nationally and encourage you to view the netcast and contribute to the discussion.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>JULY\/AUGUST NEWS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Subunit Vaccine for Nipah and Hendra Viruses Shows Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nipah and Hendra viruses are newly recognized zoonotic paramixoviruses that have resulted in numerous outbreaks in Australia and Southeast Asia, and are highly lethal in humans. In a recent study published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/stm.sciencemag.org\/content\/4\/146\/146ra107.full.html\">Science Translational Medicine<\/a><\/em>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/virol-immunol-microbio\/people\/faculty-old\/katharine-n-bossart-ph-d\/\">Katharine Bossart<\/a> <\/strong>and colleagues report that a vaccine using a soluble viral G glycoprotein afforded complete protection again Nipah virus challenge in a nonhuman primate model, bolstering support for human clinical trials. These values\u00a0best epitomize the contributions of Dr. Larry Corwin, a former member of the Microbiology Department for whom the award is named.<\/p>\n<h2>Dr. Oberhaus wins Teaching Award from the Dental School<\/h2>\n<p>Congratulations to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/virol-immunol-microbio\/people\/faculty\/stephanie-m-oberhaus-ph-d\/\">Dr. Stephanie Oberhaus <\/a><\/strong>who is the recipient of a Spencer N. Frankl Award for Excellence in Teaching at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.
