The preliminary year is typically filled by an advance match candidate who has already matched in a specialty, such as interventional radiology or anesthesiology, or is filled by someone who is interested in general surgery or one of the surgical subspecialties but has not yet matched.

We offer exposure to many areas of surgery, including trauma/acute care surgery, vascular, thoracic, colorectal, and MIS. The year is predominantly at BMC, but a few months are spent at the VA hospital in nearby West Roxbury, where you will work with residents from Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Anyone who is reentering the match will be counseled by Residency Program Director Donald Hess, MD, as well as our associate program directors. We take the education of our preliminary interns very seriously, and there will be little difference in rotation schedule and no difference in call responsibilities. All preliminary residents are expected to participate in didactic conferences and in the OR when assigned cases. As Boston’s safety-net hospital and busiest trauma center, Boston Medical Center provides unique opportunities that are not offered everywhere.

Applicants who are interested in a preliminary position in our program should send inquiries to Lana Ketlere.

Postgraduate positions for our most recent preliminary residents:

2024-2025 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Granville Baxa – Anesthesiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Michael Ferraton – Anesthesiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Mason Merriel – Medicine, Meharry Medical College
Dr. Tina Phan – Categorical PGY-1 position, General Surgery, Tufts Medical Center
Dr. David Posawatz – Categorical PGY-1 position, General Surgery, Boston Medical Center

2023-2024 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Christina Agudelo – Interventional Radiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Zhuoyan Lu – Categorical PGY-1 position, General Surgery, Danbury Hospital
Dr. Traylor Lawson – Categorical PGY-2 position, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Luis Rendon – Anesthesiology, University of Central Florida, HCA Healthcare

2022-2023 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Stephen Dalton-Petillo – Categorical PGY-3 position, General Surgery, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Brandon Caldwell – Interventional Radiology, Northwestern McGaw Medical Center
Dr. Aliyah Gaines – Preliminary PGY-2 position, General Surgery, Temple University
Dr. Jessica Shi – Interventional Radiology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Dr. Noreen Siddiqi – Preliminary PGY-2 position, General Surgery, University of Alabama

2021-2022 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Stephen Dalton-Petillo – Preliminary PGY-2 position, General Surgery, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Yousif Kettoola – Preliminary PGY-2 position, General Surgery, UMass Medical Center
Dr. Andrew Kimber – Categorical PGY-2 position, General Surgery, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Odessa Campus
Dr. Jason Park – Vascular surgery research, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Zachary Waldman (PGY-2) – Categorical PGY-3 position, General Surgery, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Odessa Campus

2020-2021 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Fangyu Chen – Anesthesia, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Ansh Johri – Interventional Radiology, University of Massachusetts Medical Center
Dr. Liz Lin – Diagnostic Radiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Isabel Sausjord – OB/GYN, University of Massachusetts Medical Center
Dr. Keerthi Vengatesan – Categorical position, General Surgery, Danbury Hospital
Dr. Gillian Goddard (PGY-2) – Categorical position, General Surgery, Boston Medical Center

2019-2020 Preliminary Residents

Dr. Breyen Coffin – Diagnostic Radiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Hai Hoang – Diagnostic Radiology, Mount Auburn Hospital
Dr. Aaron Maybury – Diagnostic Radiology, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Anne Sailer – Interventional Radiology, Yale-New Haven Hospital
Dr. Robert Walker – Neurosurgery fellowship, Boston Medical Center
Dr. Carolina Torres (PGY-2) – Categorical position, General Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is proud to offer five PGY-1 preliminary positions in surgery.
