{"id":5021,"date":"2014-02-18T11:47:29","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T16:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/surgery\/?page_id=5021"},"modified":"2022-10-03T14:53:59","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T18:53:59","slug":"human-subjects-protection-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/surgery\/human-subjects-protection-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Subjects Protection Training Certificates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two types of certification are required for anyone who wants to do human subjects research at Boston University Chobanian &#038; Avedisian School of Medicine:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A\u00a0certificate of completion of <strong>Human Subjects\u2019 Protection Training <\/strong>from Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0certificate of completion of the <strong>HIPAA Module<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each prospective researcher must have certificates for both Human Subjects Protection Training and the HIPAA Module on file in the Instiutional Review Board (IRB) office before she\/he can begin participation in a research protocol involving human subjects. This includes any research activities such as: assessment of medical records collected as part of routine medical care at Boston Medical Center for prospective or retrospective research studies, quality initiatives, questionnaires and consent of research subjects to participate in prospective research projects.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Human Subjects\u2019 Protection Training <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How to obtain your initial Human Subject Research Certification and gain access to BU IRB electronic system (INSPIR II):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initial Human Subjects\u2019 Protection Training must be done through CITI: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Detailed instruction on how to register for a CITI course can be found at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/ocr\/instructions-for-taking-bumc-citi-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/ocr\/instructions-for-taking-bumc-citi-courses\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During registration, be sure to select \u201c<strong>Boston University Medical Center<\/strong>\u201d as your institutional affiliation (<em><strong>do not pick the \u201cBoston University\u201d option<\/strong><\/em>). Also, be sure to list your \u201c@bu.edu\u201d email address as the preferred email address. After entering other information about yourself, you will be presented with several curriculum options. As part of initial certification, you should select the curriculum for &#8220;<strong>Medical Campus Biomedical Researchers<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5026\" height=\"216\" alt=\"Human Subject Research Screenshot 1\" src=\"\/surgery\/files\/2014\/02\/Human-Subject-Research-Screenshot-1-650x216.jpg\" width=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/surgery\/files\/2014\/02\/Human-Subject-Research-Screenshot-1-650x216.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/surgery\/files\/2014\/02\/Human-Subject-Research-Screenshot-1.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Please Note:<\/strong> BU IRB no longer offers on-site training for human subjects\u2019 protection training certification and does not accept the NIH\/NCI on-line training to meet the requirements of Human Subjects\u2019 Protection Training.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>HIPAA Module Certification<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For HIPAA Module Certification go to the CITI website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/<\/a>. From the list of available courses (<em>see below<\/em>), select \u201c<strong>BUMC HIPAA Module<\/strong>\u201d.
