{"id":5,"date":"2019-08-02T09:13:39","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T13:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/scan-mp\/scan-mp\/"},"modified":"2021-04-22T18:57:29","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T22:57:29","slug":"scan-mp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/scan-mp\/","title":{"rendered":"About SCAN-MP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>S<\/strong>creening for <strong>C<\/strong>ardiac <strong>A<\/strong>myloidosis with<strong> N<\/strong>uclear Imaging in <strong>M<\/strong>inority <strong>P<\/strong>opulations (<strong>SCAN-MP<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>SCAN-MP is a study conducted at Boston Medical Center, Columbia University Medical Center, and Harlem Hospital funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH).\u00a0The purpose of this study is to identify undiagnosed cardiac amyloidosis in participants recruited from the African American and Hispanic communities with early non-invasive screening.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiac amyloidosis is caused by myocardial deposition of mis-folded protein. ATTR Cardiac Amyloidosis is defined by the deposition of the transthyretin protein. Cardiac amyloidosis is an under-diagnosed disease that can be an unrecognized cause of heart failure. The overarching goal of the study is to evaluate the prevalence, phenotype, and outcomes of ATTR with genetic and non-genetic causes in the Black and Hispanic populations. The gold standard for diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis is the heart biopsy. However, this method can delay diagnosis and is an impractical screening method.
