These tissues are also critically involved in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases when immune responses become dysregulated. Accumulating evidence increasingly recognizes that the gut microbiome \u2014 the trillions of microorganisms residing in the intestine \u2014 plays a central role in either preserving mucosal health or promoting chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>Polyphosphates are an understudied class of metabolites produced by many bacteria. In this project, researchers will investigate how bacteria-derived polyphosphates influence host\u2013microbe interactions in the intestine. Although polyphosphates help bacteria survive environmental stress and evade immune defenses, emerging evidence suggests that they may also drive harmful inflammatory responses in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).<\/p>\n<p>The study will specifically examine how bacterial polyphosphates alter innate immune signaling pathways, particularly in macrophages, which are key immune cells involved in coordinating intestinal inflammation and tissue repair.
