Assistant Professor\u00a0Matt Jones<\/a> and colleagues report in\u00a0PLOS Genetics<\/a>evidence that a novel mechanism of gene regulation (involving miRNA uridylation) matters to mammals, which may apply to many settings including pulmonary diseases. In this case, they found that deficiency of the enzyme Zcchc11 leads to fewer miRNAs with uridine modifications, decreased growth factor expression, and failure to thrive during the neonatal period.<\/p>\n

Assistant Professor\u00a0Hasmeena Kathuria<\/a> is featured in a\u00a0video<\/a> on the U.S. Department of Defense website, describing her lung cancer studies being pursued as part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program.<\/p>\n

Several Pulmonary Center faculty have had perspective or opinion pieces published recently. In the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Professor\u00a0Jay Mizgerd<\/a> argued for the importance of\u00a0lung immunity<\/a> to pulmonary disease, and Associate Professor\u00a0Darrell Kotton<\/a>presented the promise of\u00a0regenerative medicine<\/a> for future patients. In JAMA, Professor\u00a0George O\u2019Connor<\/a> considered the varied strategies of optimally dosing\u00a0corticosteroid therapy<\/a> for asthma patients. In the Annals of Internal Medicine, Professor\u00a0Jeff Berman<\/a> provided an overview of\u00a0sarcoidosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Assistant Professor\u00a0Arjun Guha<\/a>, Professor\u00a0Wellington Cardoso<\/a>,\u00a0and colleagues report in\u00a0The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)<\/a> the discovery of molecular pathways involved in early cell fate decisions and the production of secretory cells in airway neuroepithelial bodies, poorly understood anatomical structures which are relevant to multiple diseases including neuroendocrine hyperplasia of infancy, diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.<\/p>\n

Assistant Professor\u00a0Renda Soylemez Wiener<\/a> and colleagues report inCHEST<\/a> that patients often interpret the presence of a pulmonary nodule as cancer, and how doctors communicate about such nodules can have substantial impacts on patient anxiety and understanding.<\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0<\/a>Bill Cruikshank<\/a> is taking on exciting new roles at BUSM. He\u00a0is the new Director of the PhD training program from the Department of Medicine at BUSM, formerly known as\u00a0Molecular Medicine<\/a> and soon to be renamed as the Graduate Program in Translational Biomedicine. In addition, he is a new Assistant Dean in the\u00a0Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0<\/a>George O\u2019Connor<\/a> has agreed to become a Contributing Editor for\u00a0JAMA<\/a>, the Journal of the American Medical Association.\u00a0 In this capacity, he will have responsibility for submissions related to pulmonary disease.<\/p>\n

Associate Professor\u00a0Darrell Kotton<\/a> and colleagues report in\u00a0Cell Stem Cell<\/a> the ability to turn stem cells into lung cells and tissue, advancing developmental biology concepts and empowering the generation of lung-relevant samples from patient cells, opening up new avenues for investigating pulmonary disease.<\/p>\n

Assistant Professor\u00a0Lee Quinton<\/a> and colleagues report in the\u00a0Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/a> the first ever complete ablation of the hepatic acute phase response, revealing that during pneumonia it enhances bloodstream defenses to prevent dissemination of infection from the lung.<\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0David Center<\/a> receives the 2012\u00a0Trudeau Award<\/a> from the American Thoracic Society, presented at the San Francisco ATS meeting in May. This award is a major honor, given to one individual a year to recognize \u201clifelong major contributions to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung disease through leadership in research, education, or clinical care.\u201d A truly\u00a0exceptional<\/strong> accomplishment!<\/p>\n
