colleagues publish in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jbc.org\/content\/285\/3\/2152.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Journal of Biological Chemistry<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>how epigenetic changes dictate which cells make surfactant proteins in the lung.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/andrewwilson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Wilson<\/a> and colleagues publish in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/36666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/em><\/a> evidence that alveolar macrophages are long-lived cells which can be genetically modified for therapeutic benefit, in this case\u00a0to diminish emphysema in a mouse model.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/georgeoconnor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George O\u2019Connor<\/a> and colleagues publish in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ng\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/abs\/ng.500.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Nature Genetics<\/em><\/a> the association of novel gene regions with altered lung function, based on large scale genomics analyses of &gt;20,000 patients with chronic lung disease.<\/p>\n<p>Pulmonary Center junior faculty have had a wonderful string of recent successes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/xingbinai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xingbin Ai<\/a> received an R01 grant from the NIH to study whether heparan sulfate-modifying enzymes are promising therapeutic targets for reversing effects of aging on muscle.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/matthewjones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Jones<\/a> received an R01 grant from the NIH to study roles of the miRNA-modifying protein Zcchc11 in pulmonary inflammation.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/leequinton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Quinton<\/a> received an R00 grant from the NIH to study functional interactions between the lung and liver during pneumonia.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/andrewwilson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Wilson<\/a> received a K08 grant from the NIH to elucidate roles of alveolar macrophages in COPD, as well as an award from the Alpha-1 Foundation to explore gene therapy approaches for patients with alpha-1 antiprotease deficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/renda-soylemez-wiener\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renda Wiener<\/a> received a K07 grant from the NIH to study clinical decision-making for pulmonary nodules.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/hasmeenakathuria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hasmeena Kathuria<\/a> received a Lung Cancer Research Program grant from the Department of Defense to study roles of Ets transcription factors in the progression of lung cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/ting-hsu-chen-md-mph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ting Chen<\/a> received a Physician-Scientist Training Award from the American Sleep Medicine Foundation for genome-wide association studies of sleep phenotypes.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/rosssummer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ross Summer<\/a> received a Robert Dawson Evans Junior Faculty Merit Award from the Department of Medicine to study roles of adiponectin in pulmonary inflammation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well-deserved recognition for up-and-coming stars of the Pulmonary Center!<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/feliciachen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Felicia Chen<\/a> and colleagues report in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/40253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/a><\/em> a signaling network essential to lung development and implicated in congenital lung disease resulting from genetic or nutritional deficiencies of Vitamin A.<\/p>\n<p>PhD student Constantina Christodoulou from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/kottonlab\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrell Kotton\u2019s<\/a> lab receives first prize in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/achievement-day-2010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russek Student Achievement Day<\/a> hosted by the BU Division of Graduate Medical Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The Pulmonary Center had a significant presence at\u00a0the 2010 International Conference of the American Thoracic Society held Friday, May 14th to Wednesday, May 19th in New Orleans, LA.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/avrumspira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avrum Spira<\/a> and colleagues publish in <a href=\"http:\/\/stm.sciencemag.org\/content\/2\/26\/26ra25.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Science Translational Medicine<\/em><\/a> that the PI3 kinase pathway may be useful as a biomarker and pharmacological target for patients with or at risk for lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Pulmonary Center faculty were recipients of 2010 awards for exceptional service to the BUSM Department of Medicine. \u00a0Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/christinecampbellreardon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christine Campbell Reardon<\/a> received the Outstanding Citizenship Award, and Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/harrisonfarber\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hap Farber <\/a>received the Special Recognition Teaching Award.<\/p>\n<p>Both Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/darrellkotton\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrell Kotton <\/a>and Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/avrumspira\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avrum Spira <\/a>were elected to become members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-asci.org\/about.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Society of Clinical Investigation<\/a> as of 2011.\u00a0 The ASCI is a medical honor society for physician-scientists with outstanding records of scholarly achievement in biomedical research.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/jeromebrody\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Brody<\/a> was a recipient of the <a href=\"http:\/\/academics.ochsner.org\/audyn.aspx?id=1570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2010 Alton Ochsner Award <\/a>from the American College of Chest Physicians, presented at their annual meeting in early November.\u00a0 The prime criterion for this award is scientific impact on the major health threats posed by tobacco use.\u00a0 Dr. Brody was recognized for his
