{"id":6395,"date":"2019-08-02T10:05:56","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T14:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/?p=6395"},"modified":"2019-08-02T10:06:30","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T14:06:30","slug":"bcrhhr-gala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/2019\/08\/02\/bcrhhr-gala\/","title":{"rendered":"BCRHHR Gala"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" data-file-id=\"3538929\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/7ca917ec195446e3aa8f6bcdc\/images\/638ffe2b-de00-42d5-9aa9-3413e9c4170d.jpg\" width=\"310\" \/><br \/>\nThe Boston Center for Refugee Health &amp; Human Rights at Boston Medical Center (BCRHHR) had its annual Client Gala on July 10<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019.\u00a0 A record number of clients and supporters of the Center came to enjoy the food, entertainment and to hear speakers on the 14<sup>th<\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>floor of Boston University\u2019s Hiebert Lounge. \u00a0A beloved pastor from the Ugandan community emceed the event, introducing BCRHHR\u2019s Director,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Lin Piwowarczyk, MD\u00a0<\/strong>as well as the client speaker and a talented young piano player, Christa Lam, who played beautifully at the end of the program.\u00a0 Evans Erilus, an Educational Case Manager at Bunker Hill Community College\u2019s Boston Welcome Back Center received BCRHHR\u2019s Ubuntu Award on behalf of the Boston Welcome Back Center.\u00a0 Each year, BCRHHR presents the Ubuntu award to an organization that embodies the spirit of the Zulu word, explained by Archbishop Desmond Tutu as meaning \u201cthe essence of being human.\u201d\u00a0 Evans spoke about how the Boston Welcome Back Center successful helps nurses trained in other countries become registered nurses in Massachusetts.\u00a0 Indeed, many of BCRHHR\u2019s clients have benefited from their assistance over the years and Boston Welcome Back has clearly demonstrated a commitment to the essence of Ubuntu.Silhouetted against the backdrop of the Boston skyline, the Executive Director of the State Office for Refugees &amp; Immigrants (ORI), Mary Truong, can be seen in this picture talking about the services ORI provides.\u00a0 All ears attentively listened to ways in which ORI\u2019s network of agencies provide direct services in culturally appropriate ways to newly arrived immigrants and refugees across Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>The final portion of the evening, the client fashion show, was a huge hit as always.\u00a0 BCHHR clients walked across the room in clothing from their home countries while Dr\u00a0Lin described the significance of their outfits with detail and zeal.\u00a0 The room erupted into applause every time a client did a spin to display the full glory of what they were wearing, with some even stopping to strike a pose for the crowd.\u00a0 That energy and enthusiasm is what the event is all about \u2013 taking a break from telling the story of trauma to celebrate resilience and hope.\u00a0 Nothing demonstrated that fact more clearly than seeing BCRHHR\u2019s clients proudly present their culture through traditional dress in the client fashion show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Boston Center for Refugee Health &amp; Human Rights at Boston Medical Center (BCRHHR) had its annual Client Gala on July 10th, 2019.\u00a0 A record number of clients and supporters of the Center came to enjoy the food, entertainment and to hear speakers on the 14th\u00a0floor of Boston University\u2019s Hiebert Lounge. \u00a0A beloved pastor from [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13421,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6395"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/13421"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6395"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6395\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6397,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6395\/revisions\/6397"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6395"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6395"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6395"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
