Shamaila Khan, PhD<\/strong>, the Co-Director for the Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology, was invited by the Islamic Medical Association of North America, or IMANA,\u00a0on a humanitarian mission to\u00a0the Rohingyan refugees in Bangladesh. The United Nations has described the military offensive against the Rohingyan people in Myanmar as\u00a0a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”\u00a0 More than a half million refugees have fled the destruction of their homes and persecution in Myanmar since August 2017. Many have endured severe torture and seen their loved ones killed.\u00a0 Cox Bazaar in Bangladesh<\/a> is a site where refugees\u00a0have congregated.\u00a0 There\u00a0they have set up\u00a0makeshift camps, composed solely of bamboo sticks and tarp, with little access to aid, safe drinking water, food, shelter or healthcare.<\/p>\n Dr. Khan\u00a0was recruited for the trip by IMANA\u00a0for her\u00a0expertise in Trauma\/Disaster Relief-Psychological First Aid\u00a0with a multi-culturally attuned framework, and was the sole psychologist in a group of physicians.\u00a0 Following her work in the camps\u00a0she received an award from IMANA, stating, \u201cThis award is presented to Dr. Shamaila Khan in grateful recognition\u00a0of the invaluable services rendered during the Save Rohingya Humanitarian Mission, March 2018\u201d.
