Renner, Jr., and AAAP CEO Kathryn Cates-Wessel met with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary\u00a0Tom Price\u00a0in a roundtable discussion on strategy and policy options to address the opioid healthcare crisis.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>DATA 2000 organizations are the organizations authorized to provide waiver training to clinicians who wish to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). \u00a0AAAP was one of four DATA 2000\u00a0to participate in the roundtable, which was called\u00a0to hear from these organizations working on the front lines of this issue. Other organizations included: American Osteopathic Association of Addiction Medicine, American Psychiatric Association , and American Society of Addiction Medicine.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cThis was a historical moment to have all four DATA 2000 organizations meeting with the secretary of Health and Human Services,\u201d said Ms. Cates-Wessel. \u201cWorking together, these organizations can help HHS address this epidemic and provide clinical expertise that is vital in this effort.\u201d \u00a0Among those also participating in the panel was\u00a0Altha Steward, MD, the\u00a0President-elect of the\u00a0American Psychiatric Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally,\u00a0AAAP will present the 2017 Founders&#8217; Award to Dr. Renner, recognizing him as a long-time leader in the substance use disorder field.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June 16, 2017, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) President John A.
