{"id":44,"date":"2009-08-03T14:35:19","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T18:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/education\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T15:28:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T19:28:13","slug":"education","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/education\/","title":{"rendered":"Movement Disorder Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One-year movement disorders subspecialty training positions in the Parkinson&#8217;s Disease and Movement Disorders Center of the Department of Neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine\/Boston Medical Center (BUSM\/BMC) are available beginning July of each calendar year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17.6px;\"><\/span>This fellowship emphasizes clinical and research training in movement disorders.\u00a0 Opportunities for development of clinical expertise include: training for botulinum toxin injections; selection, evaluation and surgical treatment of movement disorders (including intraoperative clinical neurophysiology); and clinical training based on a large volume of patients with hyperkinetic and hypokinetic movement disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Formal clinical or laboratory-based training is available in neuropharmacology, molecular biology, neuropsychology, neuroepidemiology, neuroimaging, neuropathology, animal models of neurodegenerative diseases, neurogenetics and clinical trials.\u00a0 Four full-time movement disorders clinical faculty provide clinical mentorship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/Version-2-650x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"199\" class=\"wp-image-1989 aligncenter\" style=\"font-size: 17.6px;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/Version-2-650x300.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/Version-2-768x354.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/Version-2-1024x473.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Description of the Fellowship<\/h2>\n<h3>Goals and Objectives of the Fellowship<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/7Q3A2619-472x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"182\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/7Q3A2619-472x300.jpg 472w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/7Q3A2619-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/7Q3A2619-1024x650.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/>To gain expertise in the recognition and diagnosis of movement disorders including Parkinson&#8217;s disease, atypical Parkinsonian disorders (MSA, CBGD, etc.), Huntington&#8217;s disease, Tourette&#8217;s Syndrome, tremor, chorea, athetosis, dystonia, ballism, myoclonus, tics, spasticity, rigidity, restless legs syndrome.<\/li>\n<li>To understand the biochemical, pharmacologic, genetic, and physiologic mechanisms of the movement disorders.<\/li>\n<li>To develop an understanding of the pharmacological, surgical, and supportive approaches used in the clinical management of movement disorders.<\/li>\n<li>To become familiar with genetic testing and counseling relevant to inherited movement disorders.<\/li>\n<li>To develop expertise with clinical rating scales used in the assessment of movement disorder patients, and in the conduct of clinical trials.<\/li>\n<li>To acquire basic skills in clinical or basic research relevant to movement disorders.<\/li>\n<li>To gain experience in the didactic teaching of movement disorders, including the effective use of multimedia modalities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Fellowship Activities<\/h2>\n<p>The above goals are accomplished by a fellowship experience organized around the following areas of clinical training, research training and teaching opportunities in movement disorders:<\/p>\n<h3>Clinical Training<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Outpatient management of movement disorders under supervision of Faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Botulinum toxin injection of dystonia and other movement disorders.<\/li>\n<li>Inpatient Movement Disorders consultations. The Movement Disorders fellows evaluate all inpatient consultations and all patients with movements disorders admitted to the Neurology service at Boston Medical Center.<\/li>\n<li>Pre-surgical evaluation of Parkinson&#8217;s disease or tremor patients for deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and thalamus. The Movement Disorder fellow is in integral part of the pre-surgical, intraoperative and post-surgical evaluative team.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Research<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Clinical trials: participation as a clinical evaluator in one sponsored clinical trial in which a Faculty Member is Investigator.<\/li>\n<li>Research Project: In an area (clinical or laboratory-based) chosen by the Fellow with the assistance and supervision of a Faculty member.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Teaching<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_2956-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"174\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2026\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_2956-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_2956-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/files\/2018\/10\/IMG_2956-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Movement Disorder Fellows are responsible for organizing the twice-monthly Movement disorder conference at which research and clinical presentations from B.U. and outside faculty occur, and the twice monthly video &#8220;case review&#8221; conference.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows also participate in a monthly Neurology resident and medical student didactic or case presentation Noon Conference.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>How to Apply<\/h2>\n<p><span>Applicants must be graduates of a residency program in neurology accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
