By Federal regulation we cannot process Federal loans once the academic year has ended and there are no exceptions.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">How Do I Apply for Federal Work Study?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Students must have a valid FAFSA on file for the year in which they wish to receive Federal Work Study. Because Federal Work Study is a need-based award with limited funding, we cannot guarantee all students will receive work study funding. We typically release a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/osfs\/forms\/\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Federal Work Study application<\/a> <\/span>each summer that students must complete to acknowledge their interest in Federal Work Study. Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/osfs\/cost-of-attendance-bot\/cost-of-attendance-coa-increase-request-form\/\">Cost of Attendance Increase<\/a> page for more information. First year medical students are already provided a technology expense as part of their standard cost of attendance to purchase a new computer and tablet. The increase request form is generally available in in late September\/October each academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Students are\u00a0<em>strongly<\/em> encouraged to limit expenses as much as possible due to this limited increase. Student Financials has also provided information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/studentaccountingservices\/resources\/refunds\/\">how to set up your direct deposit account<\/a> when requesting a refund.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">But what if it's a pending credit, because the loan hasn't fully disbursed yet?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>For some programs that begin before Federal loans can be received by the University, SFS can issue an advance of the credit on your account balance. Credit Advances are only considered if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are officially registered for the current semester<\/li>\n<li>You have sufficient loans approved for disbursement to repay the advance<\/li>\n<li>Classes have begun for your current semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you believe you may qualify for a credit advance you can submit a refund request through the MyBU Student Portal. Due to University and Federal regulations we cannot guarantee that all credit advances will be approved.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">When can I receive my living expense funds by direct deposit?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Per federal regulations, SFS cannot process refunds until the first day of classes each semester. Students start receiving approved refunds after the first day of classes, generally within 1 week.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Why is the Federal loan amount on my student account different than the amount I borrowed?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Federal loans are generally split evenly between the fall and spring semester. Federal loans (both the Direct Unsubsidized and Direct PLUS) have <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/what-is-origination-fee\">origination fees\u00a0<\/a>which is the amount the Department of Education charges to originate any Federal loan. Students are still responsible for repaying the total loan amount borrowed, including the cost of the origination fee.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Loan FAQ&#8217;s<\/em><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">I'm a new student receiving student loans I keep hearing about Entrance Counseling and Promissory Notes. What do I need to do?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/osfs\/resources\/types-of-aid\/loans\/entrance-exit-counseling\/\">Entrance Counseling<\/a> page for details regarding Entrance Counseling for both Federal and institutional loans.<\/li>\n<li>Students with Federal student loans must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\">Master Promissory Note<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Students with institutional &#8220;BU&#8221; loan will receive a packet of information from SFS that must be completed. This generally includes a promissory note, loan disclosure, and other information. All pages must be reviewed, signed, and returned securely to SFS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">How can I get my prior student loans deferred?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Most loans will be automatically deferred (if you are enrolled at least half-time) when the Boston University Registrar updates your enrollment status through the National Clearinghouse.
