Individuals with expired training will not be permitted to submit new protocols to the IRB, nor be named on any new protocols, nor added to existing protocols until the recertification requirements have been met. Details of the certification requirements can be found on the page entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/ohra\/required-training\/human-subjects-protection-training\/\">Human Subjects Protection Training<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who needs to be recertified? <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All faculty and staff who are engaged in human research, who are employed by the Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine, BU SPH, BU GSDM, or Boston Medical Center, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">whose training has expired or is about to expire.<\/span> Trainees (students, house officers, post-docs) who are named on BU Medical Campus\/BMC IRB protocols must also be recertified. In addition, because the BU Medical Campus\/BMC IRB is their IRB of record, human researchers at the Boston Public Health Commission and at any of the Boston HealthNet Community Health Centers must also be recertified. If you fall into one of these groups, you will need to complete recertification.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who does not need to be recertified? <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">There are two groups who do not need to be recertified: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>BU Medical Campus\/BMC faculty, staff, and trainees who are <strong>primarily based at a VA facility <\/strong>who wish to be named on a protocol being reviewed by the BU Medical Campus\/BMC IRB do not need to complete the BU Medical Campus\/BMC recertification process. We will accept documentation that they have completed the VA\u2019s CITI certification\/recertification program. These VA-based investigators must email a copy of their up-to-date VA CITI recertification form to <a href=\"mailto:medirb@bu.edu\">medirb@bu.edu<\/a> with an explanatory email.<\/li>\n<li>Clinical researchers whose primary affiliation is at another institution but who are named on a BU Medical Campus\/BMC IRB protocol (for example, a collaborator at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital) do <strong>not<\/strong> need to complete our BUMC recertification. They would, however, be expected to meet any recertification requirements of their home institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How to get recertified? <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If your training, that has expired or is about to expire,\u00a0was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> obtained through CITI under the \u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center\u201d institution (i.e. obtained from another institution other than\u00a0\u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center&#8221;), then you need to follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/ohra\/required-training\/human-subjects-protection-training\/initial-certification\/instructions-for-taking-bumc-citi-courses-for-initial-training\/\">link<\/a> which provides directions for accessing the CITI web site where\u00a0training courses are offered that allow investigators to become &#8220;Certified&#8221; and &#8220;Recertified.\u201d \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note:<\/span>\u00a0 If your last recertification was through the CR Times training, you will need to complete the CITI initial training (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/ohra\/required-training\/human-subjects-protection-training\/initial-certification\/instructions-for-taking-bumc-citi-courses-for-initial-training\/\">see instructions<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If your\u00a0training, that has expired or is about to expire,\u00a0was obtained through CITI under the \u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center\u201d institution, then CITI will send you email reminders close to the course&#8217;s expiration date and will create a Refresher Stage course for you to complete on your CITI Home page under the \u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center\u201d institution.\u00a0In this case you would follow the\u00a0instructions below for accessing the CITI web site and completing the &#8220;Refresher Stage&#8221; course that allow investigators to become &#8220;Recertified.\u201d\u00a0 We suggest that you print this page before navigating to the CITI website.\u00a0 The instructions below will be helpful to you as you navigate on that site.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"two\" class=\"offset\" id=\"two\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>My\u00a0training, that has expired or is about to expire, was completed using CITI under Boston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center and my Refresher Stage course is now due:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.citiprogram.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click on the \u201cLog In\u201d button and log in into your existing CITI account using the username and password you previously registered with. This should take you to the Welcome screen of your CITI account.<\/li>\n<li>Under \u201cInstitution Courses,\u201d next to \u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center,\u201d click on \u201cView Courses.\u201d This will take you to the \u201cShow Courses for\u201d page.<\/li>\n<li>You will see the selected courses listed under \u201cBoston University Medical Campus\/Boston Medical Center Courses.\u201d Locate the course that you want to complete (the one that has \u201cRefresher Stage\u201d following the course\u2019s name) and click on the \u201cStart Now\u201d or \u201cContinue Course\u201d button (depending on whether the course was started or not)<\/li>\n<li>If this is the first time you are visiting this page, then you need to click on \u201cComplete the Integrity Assurance Statement before beginning the course\u201d; select \u201cI agree\u2026\u201d; and then click \u201cSubmit.\u201d If you have already done this, skip this step.<\/li>\n<li>You should notice that the \u201cStart\u201d button for the first module listed under \u201cRequired Modules\u201d is clickable now. Click on \u201cStart\u201d button to start reading it and taking the quiz.<\/li>\n<li>As soon as one module is completed, the next module (if there is one) will be available and the \u201cStart\u201d button for that module becomes clickable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once you pass\u00a0the Refresher Stage course, the system will email your certificate to the IRB on the next morning. There is no need for you to send the IRB a copy of your certificate unless specifically requested to do so by the IRB. Your CITI training information will automatically be uploaded the next morning directly into the IRB&#8217;s INSPIR system and into your INSPIR account if you already have one.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All BU Medical Campus\/BMC human researchers must be recertified every three years.
