It is a chance to make healthy lifestyle choices for herself and her baby, a time to reach out for needed resources, and an opportunity to form deeper connections with her community.\u00a0Our Birth Sisters Program is an innovative multi-cultural doula service that offers women &#8220;sister-like&#8221; support during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period. (The word &#8220;doula&#8221; comes from the ancient Greek meaning &#8220;a woman who serves&#8221; and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.)<\/p>\n<p>Trained to give social support to at-risk mothers in their community and connect them to needed resources, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmc.org\/pediatrics-birthplace\/services\/birthsisters.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birth Sisters<\/a> offer prenatal home visits, labor support and help at home after the baby comes.
