In particular, they focused on the clinical course after graft occlusion and on subsequent reintervention strategies.

Cynthia has gone on to present her research at the 2026 Medical Student Research Symposium and was awarded the Serchuck Poster Award. She has also presented at the 35th Grasberger Research Symposium Lecture and Visiting Professor Day, and the 53rd Annual Society of Clinical Vascular Surgery Conference in Chula Vista, California. Cynthia is currently working on submitting the manuscript to the Journal of Vascular Surgery.

While working with the Department of Vascular Surgery at BMC, Cynthia discovered a research project conducted by Dr. Colten Yahn examining long-term functional outcomes in patients with upper extremity trauma. Because many upper extremity traumas require bypass procedures for limb salvage, her attention naturally turned to investigating the long-term patency rates of these procedures and their associated clinical outcomes.

Beyond the subject matter itself, Cynthia underscores the importance and timeliness of her research. Notably, upper extremity bypass accounts for less than 5% of all peripheral bypass procedures, which is far less common than lower extremity bypass. This rarity, combined with the heterogeneity of its indications, has resulted in limited long-term patency data. Consequently, most current guidelines for upper extremity bypass patency and clinical surveillance are extrapolated from lower extremity bypass research. However, since the etiology and patient populations differ significantly between the two procedures, this approach has clear limitations. Thus, generating robust data for upper extremity bypass is essential to guide surgical decision-making and inform subsequent clinical management.

Through this research experience, Cynthia has gained valuable insights into her own capabilities and professional growth. Most significantly, she has discovered her capacity to venture into unfamiliar research territory, contribute meaningfully to ongoing work, and work on a project through to national conference presentation and journal submission. In the process, she developed persistence in tackling complex, data-limited topics while still producing meaningful results. Yet perhaps her most important realization is recognizing that she thrives when curiosity drives her work, and that she finds the most growth in collaborative, mentorship-rich environments, precisely like the one she cultivated with Dr. Siracuse and Dr. Alonso.

Cynthia Huang is a third year medical student.
