Students may choose one of two pathways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/research-year-program-bumc\/\">a research year at BUMC<\/a>\u00a0which provides a scholarship to pay for tuition costs; <strong>or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/external-research-year-programs\/\">a research year at an external site<\/a>. Students considering this pathway may be interested in the programs below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students are also highly encouraged to read the policies and procedures for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/external-research-year-programs\/\">research year at external sites<\/a>. <a href=\"mailto:mlayne@bu.edu\">Matthew Layne<\/a>, Assistant Dean of Research, is happy to discuss application strategies with students.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">AI Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights (AI-READI) Yearlong Research Internship Program<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/shileyeye.ucsd.edu\/research\/ai_readi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yearlong mentored research internship program<\/a> aimed at expanding the future workforce at the intersection of data science\/AI and the biomedical sciences and clinical research. <\/span><span>The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aireadi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"AI-READI\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AI Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights program (AI-READI)<\/a><span> is funded by the NIH through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridge2ai.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bridge2AI\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) program<\/a><span>, a large trans-NIH initiative to generate new datasets for advancing artificial intelligence (AI).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.heart.org\/en\/research-programs\/aha-funding-opportunities\/predoctoral-fellowship\">American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship<\/a> is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising students who are matriculated in pre-doctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs and who intend careers as scientists, physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists, or related careers aimed at improving global cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and brain health.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Benjamin Fox Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/pages\/benjamin-fox-orthopaedic-research-scholar-award\">Benjamin Fox Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award<\/a> promotes clinical research by giving extraordinary U.S. medical students the opportunity to investigate pertinent topics in clinical orthopaedic research at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">BIDMC Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/aceplasticsurgeons.org\/jobs\/?jobID=4388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\/Harvard Medical School<\/a> seeks medical students taking a dedicated research year following completion of their 3rd year of medical school for this fellowship. This fellowship program offers experience in clinical and basic science research, led by Samuel J. Lin, MD, MBA. Research projects include surgical outcomes analysis, cost and utility studies, and translational\/basic science projects related to biomaterials and noninvasive tissue perfusion assessment. <span>Research fellows will engage in approximately 10-20 projects per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Dana Farber - Cancer Care Delivery and Outcomes Research Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/research\/integrative-research\/population-sciences\"> Cancer Care Delivery and Outcomes Research Fellowship<\/a> provides a one-year mentored training experience within the Division of Population Sciences at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in research focused on cancer care delivery for applicants who are from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine (URiM). <a href=\"https:\/\/dfci.widen.net\/s\/d5t26r72sq\/cancer-care-delivery-outcomes-research-fellowship.pdf\">Learn more.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/global-health-research-partnership\/\">HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship<\/a> offers 12-month mentored research fellowships in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) designed to address some of the world\u2019s most pressing health challenges. LMIC fellows will have the opportunity to spend up to three months at one of the HBNU-consortium US institutions, as part of their fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">NIH-Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP)<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cc.nih.gov\/training\/mrsp\">NIH Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP)<\/a> is a year-long program aimed at developing future clinician-scientists through immersive biomedical research experience. It is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of accredited medical, dental, or veterinary schools. The program includes research involvement, a comprehensive curriculum, and mentorship.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Third-year medical students are invited to apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orthogate.org\/forums\/medical-student-research-fellowship\/9997-2025-2026-mass-general-hospital-sports-medicine-research-fellowship#40148\">Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine<\/a> at Massachusetts General Hospital. This is an extremely competitive fellowship that is awarded to one rising fourth-year medical student who has demonstrated a keen interest in orthopaedics and is a competitive candidate for orthopaedic residency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Physician &amp; Scientist Support Foundation Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF)<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepssf.org\/msrf\/\">Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF)<\/a> provides a stipend and allowances, for a year-long research opportunity in fundamental biomedical research for U.S. medical students aspiring to be physician-scientists. All applicants <strong>must be nominated by the medical school dean<\/strong>. The medical school dean can <strong>nominate only one applicant<\/strong> in any competition year.\u00a0Our medical school will have an internal competition to select our candidate.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedics Research Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Johns Hopkins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/orthopaedic-surgery\/education\/poggi-peds-fellowship\">Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedics Research Fellowship<\/a> is a year-long fellowship program for extraordinary medical students. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical research and learn the skills necessary to produce sound, high-quality papers.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Rheumatology Research Foundation Rheumatology Future Physician Scientist Award<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheumresearch.org\/preceptorships\">Rheumatology Research Foundation Rheumatology Future Physician Scientist Award<\/a> aims to support the nation\u2019s top emerging physician scientists and promote their interest in investigative careers in rheumatology.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarnofffoundation.org\/page\/Fellowship_Info\">Sarnoff Fellowship Program<\/a> offers a year-long research opportunity for medical students at accredited U.S. medical schools to work intensively in a biomedical research facility. The program aims to engage students in cardiovascular research with leading scientists and develop future leaders in the field.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Vascular Research Fellowship<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/files\/2022\/12\/CVR-Research-Fellowship.pdf\">Center for Vascular Research (CVR)<\/a> at the University of Maryland &amp; Baltimore VA offers tailored research fellowships for undergraduate, medical, osteopathic, or graduate students, as well as residents taking a gap year. The fellowship emphasizes fundamental vascular disease research, the translation of discoveries into clinical applications, and the testing of new protocols and devices. Pearce, MD, Vascular Surgery Student Research Award<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<span>This is a 12-month mentored research experience for medical students to perform clinical or basic science research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/vascular.org\/trainees-students\/training\/research-opportunities\/william-h-pearce-md-vascular-surgery-student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.<\/a> Awardees will perform their research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor selected from vascular and\/or cardiovascular researchers at Northwestern University.
