For students engaging in research with VA faculty mentors, they must be US citizens or permanent residents. If you have any concerns related to eligibility, please contact the program directors.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in 7 weeks of full-time research during the period of (<span>tentatively) May 16 \u2013 July 12, 2026<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Attend the required orientation in April 17, 2026 at 1 pm and summer workshops including Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).<\/li>\n<li>Attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/getting-involved-in-research\/mssrp\/\">MSSRP summer sessions<\/a> (see &#8220;Summer Schedule&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>Submit the following final documents by August 3.\n<ul>\n<li>Summary report<\/li>\n<li>Thank you note addressed to your donor (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of the program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Present a poster of your research at the annual medical student research symposium in January\/February.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Payment of Awards<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Stipends are awarded and directly distributed to students through the MyBU Student Portal at the end of May. To guarantee timely disbursement of funds, students must link their bank account information through the Nelnet\u2019s Student Choice Refunds (SCR) Profile which can be done on the\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/studentaccountingservices\/resources\/refunds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/studentaccountingservices\/resources\/refunds\/\" data-linkindex=\"7\">MyBU Student Portal<\/a><\/span><span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Non-service stipends are not considered wages; they are intended to help recipients defray living or other expenses while conducting research. Stipend recipients will not receive a 1099 tax form at the end of the year, but all recipients are responsible for independently reporting the income to IRS on their tax returns.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b><span>International students<\/span><\/b><span>\u00a0will have 14% withheld in taxes and will receive a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/seo\/getting-paid\/taxes\/1042s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/seo\/getting-paid\/taxes\/1042s\/\" data-linkindex=\"8\">1042S form<\/a>\u00a0for the amount that the University withheld by late March the following year, unless they can claim tax treaty exemption.
