A nation struggles to battle a global pandemic and at the same time undo centuries of systemic racism, all while grappling with one of the most consequential elections in its history. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel, but this is our reality. For some, the impacts of this moment are mostly viewed through our phones and televisions. However, for others, the pain is much closer to home and the stakes are much higher. This workshop will focus on how we as individuals and collectively through our work can meet this moment with the urgency that it requires, especially for the people who are counting on us most.
REGISTER

Raul Fernandez, Ed.D.
Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
Lecturer, Higher Education Administration

February 23, 2021
Applying Theories of Change to Measure Learning and Impact
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have gained traction as resources for professional development, in addition to a solution to pandemic learning constraints. This talk will highlight the method our Postdoc Academy team used to evaluate a professional development MOOC for postdoctoral trainees created by a university consortium in the United States. Most approaches to evaluating MOOCs focus on analysis of participation, outcomes from course assignments, self-reported learning outcomes, course completion and user pathways through the online content or clickstream data. Few published evaluations describe in detail how learning happens within online courses and the anticipated medium and longer term cognitive and behavioral outcomes for participants. This work aims to guide those who are designing, implementing and evaluating MOOCs or short courses through applying theories of change to focus evaluation on the process of learning. This approach can be used as a complement to traditional approaches for evaluating any type of extended learning opportunity, from MOOCs or short courses to a series of connected workshops.
REGISTER[Recording]
Access Passcode: 7Zk@.VyPIntegrating Evaluation for Learning Throughout Your Program_Sarah Hokanson

Sarah Hokanson, Ph.D.
Assistant Provost, Professional Development & Postdoctoral Affairs

March 23, 2021
Career and Professional Development Mentoring Promising Practices
BU PhD students and postdocs were surveyed over the past few years to assess their needs on career and professional mentoring (outside of scientific mentoring).
