Any peer-reviewed publications arising from NIH-funded research on or after April 7, 2008 must<\/em> be submitted to the National Library of Medicine’s public access repository, PubMed Central<\/a>. The NIH Public Access Policy requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to PubMed Central immediately upon acceptance for publication.<\/p>\n

The updated NIH Public Access Policy<\/a><\/u>\u00a0will be effective July 1, 2025<\/strong>.\u00a0 This change in effective date will allow researchers and members of the public to have speedier access to NIH-supported findings.\u00a0 All other aspects of the 2024 Public Access Policy remain the same. Until that date, NIH’s current (2008) Public Access Policy remains in effect.     Who is responsible for compliance?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The PI is ultimately responsible for making sure that articles resulting from NIH-funded research are submitted to PubMed Central in compliance with the Policy. However, delegates may be assigned to handle much of the administrative work of submission in cases where this is not handled directly by the journal publisher (see ‘Submission,’ below).<\/p>\n
