MEDLINE is a database of over 23 million biomedical citations from nearly 5,000 journals that date back to 1950. MEDLINE is indexed by information specialists using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), the NLM&#8217;s controlled vocabulary, which provides a consistent method for retrieving information.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tips and Hints for Searching PubMed<\/h3>\n<p><b>When searching:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access PubMed via the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov.ezproxy.bu.edu\/sites\/entrez?otool=mabummlib\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>on the Library&#8217;s<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medlib\">homepage<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Details&#8221; tab to determine exactly what is being searched.<\/li>\n<li>Use the Clipboard to temporarily (8 hrs) save citations from multiple searches.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that searching is a process that takes practice, time and patience.<\/li>\n<li>If frustrated contact a medical librarian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The MeSH Database:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is accessible from PubMed&#8217;s left blue navigation bar or at:<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/mesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/mesh<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Helps users to locate MeSH terms.<\/li>\n<li>Provides access to subheadings to refine searches.<\/li>\n<li>Defines MeSH terms and provides access to the hierarchical MeSH Tree.<\/li>\n<li>Can be used to build PubMed search strategies, however, the resultant searches although targeted may exclude current citations not yet indexed with MeSH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Boolean Operator AND:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrows a search so that retrieved citations contain information about both search terms. For example, &#8220;cranberry juice AND urinary tract infections&#8221; retrieves information about both cranberry juice and urinary tract infections.<\/li>\n<li>AND is automatically inserted between search terms in PubMed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Boolean Operator OR:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Broadens a search so retrieved citations contain information about either search terms. For example, &#8220;cranberry juice OR blueberry juice&#8221; retrieves information about either cranberry juice or blueberry juice.<\/li>\n<li>Must be capitalized in order to be recognized in PubMed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Limits:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should be added one at a time to better control searching.<\/li>\n<li>Remain in effect until they are cleared or if you switch to &#8220;related articles&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>My NCBI:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is a free service that allows registered users to save searches, set preferences and set up automatic updates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Printing, Emailing and Exporting citations:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can be done by first selecting applicable citations and then using the drop-down menu labeled &#8220;send to&#8221;.
