{"id":12115,"date":"2019-10-07T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medicine\/?page_id=12115"},"modified":"2026-05-29T17:05:56","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T21:05:56","slug":"evans-clinician-designation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medicine\/dom-awards\/evans-clinician-designation\/","title":{"rendered":"Evans Physician Designation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <strong>Evans Physician Designation <\/strong>was established in 2017 to recognize and celebrate outstanding clinicians who possess clinical skills, attributes and professionalism that define excellence and to establish a home for such individuals to share experiences and grow their membership.\u00a0 Similar to the DOM Clinical Excellence Award, the designation is intended to acknowledge the value of clinical medicine and honor clinical role models among the faculty. \u00a0However, the Evans Clinician will be a lifelong member of an expanding group of recognized clinicians who will define the role of the group over time.\u00a0 Membership is meant to be honorific but not exclusive (5-10 new members per year), and membership will be displayed on a special name tag.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Who can nominate?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Section Chiefs, faculty members, fellows, medical residents and our nurse colleagues can nominate for this designation.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Who can be nominated?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Nominees must be faculty members with at least seven years of experience at Boston University.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Who is ineligible?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Current Evans Clinicians<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>What is the timeline?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The initial call for nomination will go out in the early summer months with a deadline of late summer. The award winners will be announced at the Evans Day Celebration in the fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Criteria:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Individuals who qualify for this designation possess an exemplary approach to patient care and an unwavering focus on the patient in all aspect of their professional life (including research, teaching and administration) over time. \u00a0A longstanding panel of patients is desirable but not required.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Specific considerations:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong doctor-patient relationship<\/li>\n<li>Patient-centric care and shared decision-making<\/li>\n<li>Recognized by patients and families for commitment and dedication (assessed by fellows, colleagues and clinical staff)<\/li>\n<li>The person others bring tough cases to for discussion<\/li>\n<li>Requests to see relatives and friends of colleagues and trainees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Process<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nominations can be prepared by any clinician in the DOM but must be endorsed and signed by the nominee\u2019s Section Chief.\u00a0 The nomination letter should include a detailed justification for the nomination.\u00a0 Two additional letters of support from should accompany the nomination letter; group letters are welcome. Submit these <strong>three<\/strong> documents using the link below.<\/p>\n<p>Since this award focuses on patient care and clinical acumen, nominations and letters of support should focus predominantly on these qualities. Nomination letters that include quotes from those working clinically with the patient \u2013 especially those in other professions, those in other specialties, and quotes from patient reviews \u2013carry particular weight.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees shall remain actively considered for the <strong>Evans Physician Designation <\/strong>for 3 years including the year of the nomination.\u00a0 If not selected, re-nomination will be required.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations are solicited in the early summer with deadlines given late summer.\u00a0 The request for nominations is done via e-mail to all faculty and Administrative Directors.
