{"id":12115,"date":"2019-10-07T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medicine\/?page_id=12115"},"modified":"2026-08-26T16:39:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T20:39:21","slug":"evans-clinician-designation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medicine\/dom-awards\/evans-clinician-designation\/","title":{"rendered":"Evans Physician Designation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">About the Evans Physician Designation<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Established in 2017, the <\/span><strong><span>Evans Physician Designation<\/span><\/strong><span> recognizes and celebrates outstanding clinicians who exemplify excellence in clinical skill, patient care, professionalism, and leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Similar to the DOM Clinical Excellence Award, the designation honors the value of clinical medicine and recognizes faculty who serve as exceptional clinical role models. Recipients become lifelong members of a growing community of distinguished clinicians who share their experiences, support one another, and help shape the group\u2019s role over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Approximately five to ten new members may be selected each year. Recipients are recognized with a special designation badge.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Who can nominate?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Section Chiefs, faculty members, fellows, medical residents and our nurse colleagues can nominate for this designation.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Who can be nominated?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Nominees must be faculty members with at least seven years of experience at Boston University.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Who is ineligible?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Current Evans Clinicians<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>What is the timeline?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The initial call for nomination will go out in the early summer months with a deadline of late summer. The award winners will be announced at the Evans Day Celebration in the fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Criteria<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Individuals who qualify for this designation possess an exemplary approach to patient care and an unwavering focus on the patient in all aspect of their professional life (including research, teaching and administration) over time. \u00a0A longstanding panel of patients is desirable but not required.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Specific Considerations<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong doctor-patient relationship<\/li>\n<li>Patient-centric care and shared decision-making<\/li>\n<li>Recognized by patients and families for commitment and dedication (assessed by fellows, colleagues and clinical staff)<\/li>\n<li>The person others bring tough cases to for discussion<\/li>\n<li>Requests to see relatives and friends of colleagues and trainees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Nomination Requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Any clinician in the Department of Medicine may prepare a nomination. However, the nomination must be endorsed and signed by the nominee\u2019s Section Chief.<br \/>\n<\/span><span>Each nomination packet must include <strong>three<\/strong> documents:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol data-spread=\"false\" start=\"1\">\n<li><span>A nomination letter providing a detailed justification for the nomination<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Two additional letters of support; group letters are welcome<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Because the Evans Physician Designation recognizes excellence in patient care and clinical acumen, all letters should focus primarily on these qualities. Letters that include perspectives from individuals who work clinically with the nominee\u2014particularly colleagues from other professions or specialties\u2014as well as excerpts from patient reviews, are especially valuable.<br \/>\n<\/span><span><br \/>\nSubmit all three documents using this link: <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/app.smartsheet.com\/b\/form\/019e755986ab767cbee561ade24319c0\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>2026 NOMINATIONS ARE CLOSED<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Review and Selection<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Nominations are solicited in early summer and are typically due in late summer. The call for nominations is distributed by email to all Department of Medicine faculty and Administrative Directors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>All past recipients of the Evans Physician Designation collectively comprise the selection committee. The committee is led by Amber Moore, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, and convenes in early fall to review and discuss the nominees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Nominees remain under active consideration for three years, including the year in which they were nominated. If a nominee is not selected during that period, a new nomination will be required for future consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Award Notification and Presentation<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>The Vice Chair of Clinical Operations notifies the selected recipient(s) in advance of the Annual Evans Days Reception.
