Vice Chairs of Research

The Department of Medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is seeking two exceptional physician leaders to serve as Vice Chairs of Research—one focused on Basic & Translational Science and the other on Clinical & Implementation Sciences.

These complementary roles offer a unique opportunity to shape and lead a dynamic, mission-driven research enterprise spanning the full continuum—from discovery to real-world impact—while advancing health equity for the diverse communities we serve.

About the Roles

Together, the Vice Chairs will provide strategic leadership across the Department’s research portfolio, driving innovation, expanding funding, and strengthening collaboration across disciplines.

Vice Chair, Basic & Translational Science

This leader will guide the Department’s discovery research enterprise, advancing high-impact basic and translational science while accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical innovation.

Key priorities include:

  • Developing a department-wide vision for basic and translational research
  • Expanding externally funded laboratory-based research
  • Enhancing core facilities, infrastructure, and technology
  • Supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific innovation

Vice Chair, Clinical & Implementation Sciences

This leader will oversee the Department’s clinical, population health, and implementation science research portfolio, advancing patient-centered and equity-driven research that improves health outcomes and healthcare delivery.

Key priorities include:

  • Growing clinical and implementation science research programs
  • Strengthening infrastructure for clinical trials, informatics, and data analytics
  • Embedding research within clinical operations to drive real-world impact
  • Promoting community-engaged and population health research

Ideal Candidates

We are seeking established academic leaders who bring:

  • MD, PhD, or equivalent degree (role-dependent)
  • Appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
  • Strong track records of external funding and scholarly achievement
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading successful research teams

Candidates should be collaborative, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to advancing research that improves care for underserved populations.
