Student Government<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<span> The program is sufficiently large that the MD\/PhD students organize their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/mdphd\/current-students\/student-life\/student-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student government<\/a> that manages social activities, speakers, communications and interaction with the administration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">2.  MD\/PhD Career Development Events<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>These events usually occur on the first and third Monday of the month and are run by the student government social committee. The events are usually split between students speakers and social events. For a complete calendar, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/mdphd\/current-students\/md-phd-career-development-events\/\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>a. \u00a0Rotation Talks:<\/strong>\u00a0M2 and G1 students are required to give formal presentations on their laboratory rotations from the previous summer. These give students an opportunity\u00a0to practice presenting their research. These talks also expose the student body\u00a0to the variety of labs on campus and the projects and techniques\u00a0that fellow students are working on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b. Panel <\/strong><strong>Discussions: <\/strong>Senior students present their perspective on key issues for junior MD\/PhD students, including advice on coping with the work load in BUSM I and II, preparing for USMLE Step 1, choosing laboratories, the scheduling of\u00a0clinical rotations, and\u00a0applying for\u00a0residencies and fellowships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>c.\u00a0 Round Robin Research Presentations:\u00a0<\/strong>Graduate students present\u00a0five minute brief overviews of their projects. These are a great way to hear about different techniques and projects that students in the program are working on.\u00a0They also\u00a0give the M1 and M2 students ideas for labs that they might not have considered or known about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>d. \u00a0Clinical Case Presentations:\u00a0<\/strong>M3 and M4 students present interesting cases that they have encountered on their clinical rotations to the community in a \u201crounds\u201d style interactive format.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">3. MD\/PhD Grand Rounds<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span>The student-organized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/mdphd\/current-students\/md-phd-grand-rounds\/\">seminar series<\/a> occurs once a month during the Fall and Spring semesters and seeks to recruit physician scientists\u00a0at varying stages of their careers. This give students the chance to hear a range of perspectives, from residents and fellows to experienced leaders that have excelled in their fields and offer different perspectives on career paths and choices after completing the BUSM MD\/PhD program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">4. Retreats<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The annual retreat is a student-planned initiative <span style=\"color: #000000;\">attended by all members of the MD\/PhD training program.\u00a0 Students interact and learn from their colleagues in all years during this event. The retreat includes a keynote speaker (usually an alum of the program), several student scientific and clinical presentations, and a poster session where M2s and all students in the graduate phase of the program present research from their labs or rotations.
