If you returned to the BU Chobanian and Avedisian campus for the annual alumni weekend you may have seen a number of changes in regard to the physical layout and to the curriculum. What you may not have heard about are the extensive changes in the MD\/PhD training program since your time with us. We have worked hard to increase the financial support of our students and over the past 7 years we have made substantial changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our students now all write NIH grants with a high percentage receiving funding. A number of the M4s advance the medical education of the first year MD\/PhDs by mentoring in a course in the fall, and they may also play a key role in teaching the MD800 transition course. For both activities they receive credit. An increasing number of our students have been selected for AOA (nine students in the last eight years), publish in top notch peer-reviewed journals, and have made successful forays into biotechnology. \u00a0They have even initiated and participated in the organization and hosting of three American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) meetings. These advances allow our students to enter extremely competitive residency programs that further challenge them and foster growth with an increasing number of our students entering research residencies.<\/p>\n

We want to continue to improve our program and ensure equity among our student body by enabling all students to attend workshops, conferences, or external rotations without creating a financial burden. To help achieve this, we have recently created a MD\/PhD Alumni Fund that was initiated with $10,000 in contributions from BUCASOM faculty. The goal is to directly benefit all of our students.\u00a0 To support our mission, please visit our donation website below. All contributions of any size will be greatly appreciated.<\/p>\n

We are delighted to have trained so many of you and hope that you will support the dreams of the next generation of physician scientists behind you.<\/p>\n
