{"id":437,"date":"2011-12-21T15:28:17","date_gmt":"2011-12-21T20:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/?page_id=437"},"modified":"2024-01-18T13:34:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T18:34:38","slug":"scientific-computing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/research-computing\/scientific-computing\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientific Computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An array of powerful computing resources are available at Boston University, and at the Medical Campus in particular.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/research\/scv\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scientific Computing &amp; Visualization (IS&amp;T)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span>The Scientific Computing and Visualization (SCV) group within\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Information Services &amp; Technology<\/a> at\u00a0<a target=\"_top\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston University<\/a> provides specialized computing and communication resources in support of computational science and engineering, scientific visualization, computer graphics, and other disciplines that require high-performance computing or complex visualization. SCV manages these resources in close collaboration with the University\u2019s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ccs.bu.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Computational Science<\/a>. The supercomputing facilities provided by the group include a 1024-node IBM Blue Gene system, a collection of IBM pSeries 655 shared-memory systems, and Intel and AMD based Linux clusters. The group also manages the Computer Graphics Laboratory and the high-resolution, tiled, stereoscopic Deep Vision Display Wall. A more detailed description of the\u00a0<a target=\"_top\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/research\/computation\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">computing facilities<\/a> and\u00a0<a target=\"_top\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/research\/visualization\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visualization capabilities<\/a> is available.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_top\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/cardiovascularproteomics\/proteomics-core-laboratory\/\" name=\"proteo\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/cardiovascularproteomics\/proteomics-core-laboratory\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proteomics Core Laboratory<\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal;\">The Proteomics Core Laboratory computing resources include:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A high performance computer cluster (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/cardiovascularproteomics\/files\/PDFs\/LANdiagram.pdf\">LANdiagram<\/a>) for high-intensity bioinformatics processing, consisting of two 4-way data processing computers and a redundant data storage array server. The 4-way data processors each utilize four AMD Opteron 880 processors (2.4 GHz), 32 GB RAM, dual gigabit data ports, with 2 TB of local disk space in a RAID 5 single parity configuration and a separate 400 GB RAID 1 mirrored array for the operating system and applications. The redundant data storage array server utilizes two AMD Opteron 2216 processors (2.4 GHz), 4 GB RAM, dual gigabit data ports, with 4 TB of local disk space in a RAID 6 double parity configuration and a separate 40 GB RAID 1 mirrored array for its operating system.<\/li>\n<li>Global computer network comprising 17 workstations for secure online and offline data processing and analysis.
