Internal Medicine is a specialty that focuses on the care of adult patients and is incredibly far reaching, including many specialties ranging from primary care general internists, to hospitalists, to the medicine subspecialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and many other others.<\/p>\n
Internists provide care across the spectrum of patient concerns- from prevention and health promotion to addressing acute medical problems, to managing chronic conditions. The internist is the doc that doctors most likely seek when they are sick. Internal Medicine emphasizes the practice of scientifically-based, humanistic medicine. The discipline also places a great emphasis on our role in research, quality improvement and education.<\/p>\n
In the first year, several Dept of Medicine faculty members serve as facilitators for the Integrated Problems Course and as clinical teachers in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course, in which first year students work in the outpatient setting with faculty members for 10-12 weeks.\u00a0 In addition, many DOM faculty members provide lectures in the first-year PRiSM curriculum.<\/p>\n
The DOM faculty is even more involved in the second-year curriculum.\u00a0 In the Disease and Therapy Course, the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, Renal, Gastroenterology, Hematology and Endocrine mod<\/p>\n
In the 3rd<\/sup> and 4th<\/sup> years, the DOM directs the Medicine 1 Clerkship<\/a>, an 8-week inpatient-based clerkship; Medicine 2<\/a>, a 4-week elective that focuses on advanced medical issues in the ambulatory setting; the Medicine Sub-internship and Advanced Acting Internship<\/a>; and many sub-specialty electives.
