Given that the overall trend, in the hospital as well as nationwide, has been a decline in the number of Codes and\u00a0an increase in the\u00a0number of Rapid Responses, Residents have expressed significant concerns of feeling unprepared\u00a0in leading\u00a0codes.<\/p>\n

In response to this, we have sensed the need to\u00a0implement a Code Leadership Training Series\u00a0<\/strong>which includes the following components.<\/p>\n

Goals<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n

– To improve Resident confidence in running codes<\/p>\n

– To educate and improve code leadership skills including leader identification, organization, closed loop communication, talking out loud, and debriefing\u00a0<\/p>\n

-To make a new policy for identification of code leader with tangible identification (lanyards)\u00a0to be passed off with code pager daily<\/p>\n

-More consistent \u00a0incorporation of\u00a0debriefing after every code, irrespective of outcome<\/p>\n

Interventions:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

– Organizing hands-on mannekin based simulation of Code Leadership using case scenarios as a boot camp<\/p>\n

– Ongoing monthly simulation sessions with more medically complex scenarios<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Ongoing education\/ refresher courses\u00a0available to MICU\/CCU residents prior to the start of their rotation (as part of their orientation)<\/p>\n

-Increase and make readily available resident resources<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n
