{"id":2852,"date":"2014-07-30T12:17:38","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T16:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/id\/?page_id=2852"},"modified":"2026-07-29T13:48:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T17:48:21","slug":"he-as","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/id\/fellowship\/research-training\/he-as\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospital Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The goal of the Healthcare Epidemiology (HE) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) Track within the Boston Medical Center (BMC) Infectious Disease Fellowship Program is to prepare trainees for a career in academic hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship, incorporating practical hands-on skills training while providing mentorship and resources towards focused scholarly projects. The tangible short-term objective of this program is to complete a project for submission to the SHEA meeting in the second year.<\/p>\n<p>This dedicated training program will position our trainees as competitive candidates for academic HE-AS positions. It leverages existing strengths of the BUSM ID Fellowship Program and BMC and VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) faculty. In fact, our faculty are recognized leaders in HE-AS and have chaired important guideline panels and committees for ID and hospital epidemiology professional societies. In addition to our resources at BMC and the VABHS, we have strong professional connections with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Boston Public Health Commission. Our HE-AS track also leverages the high priority of health equity and community medicine at BMC to include projects that seek to provide equitable care for all our patients. The trainee will learn how to perform the core activities of the hospital epidemiologist or antimicrobial steward through active participation as a member of both the infection control and antimicrobial stewardship teams.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Curriculum Year 1<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Completion of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Primer on Hospital Epidemiology, Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship; this primer is a required component for all ID trainees by the end of the ACGME-accredited training.<\/p>\n<p>For trainees on this track, the primer will be completed in year 1 of fellowship during the four scheduled weeks for research. In addition, the trainee will have hands-on participation in HE-AS activities at BMC and\/or VABHS that will allow the trainee to put the learning into real-life context and practice. The trainee will have the option of spending one of those weeks as an observer at the Boston Public Health Commission.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, the trainee will work with BMC and VABHS faculty to either choose from a list of available scholarly projects or develop their own original proposal to complete during the second year of fellowship training and to address any required Institutional review board submissions or certifications. The trainee will also identify a quality improvement project to complete during fellowship training.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Curriculum Year 2<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>During this year, the fellow will have the opportunity to function within the infection control and antimicrobial stewardship teams at either BMC or the VABHS. Both institutions have grant-funded ongoing investigations that fellows can join, rich datasets that can be used to ask original research questions, and resources available to provide epidemiology, biostatistics, implementation science and mixed methods expertise and support.
