Dr. Edward C. Jones López is trained in infectious diseases and epidemiology and has extensive experience in the design, implementation and oversight of large, international collaborative research projects. Over the last decade, Dr. Jones has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in several clinical studies in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV, and has made a number of contributions to the understanding of TB in human populations. Fluent in Spanish, French and Portuguese, Dr. Jones has lived and worked for extended periods of time in under-resourced settings providing him with a unique ability to work effectively in cross-cultural settings and pursue his longstanding interest in TB, HIV/AIDS and global health issues. Dr. Jones is particularly interested in translational science and in applying epidemiologic methods to understand the determinants of TB transmission, infection and disease, using a multidisciplinary research approach.
After finishing medical school in 1991, Dr. Jones worked for two years with Médècins Sans Frontières/ Doctors without Borders (MSF-France) in Angola and on the Thai-Cambodian border. From 1993 to 1998 he completed training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición “Salvador Zubirán” in Mexico City. From 1998 to 2001, he was an International Fogarty Research Fellow at the Division of in Infectious Diseases at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland; during this time he obtained a Master’s in Science degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics while working at the NIH-funded Tuberculosis Research Unit. Dr. Jones was then recruited to New Jersey Medical School-UMDNJ where, after a two-year deployment in Uganda to launch a large research project focusing on multi-drug resistant TB, he worked as the principal epidemiologist in a multidisciplinary team of basic and clinical TB researchers until his recruitment to BU/BMC in June 2010.
Dr. Jones is Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases at Boston University Medical School and has a secondary appointment at the Department of Epidemiology, Boston University School of Public Health. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Department of Medicine at New Jersey Medical School. In addition to his research and clinical responsibilities, Dr. Jones helps coordinate an “international elective” for house staff and fellows.
