Clinical work is performed at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bmc.org\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Boston Medical Center<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, which serves a culturally and ethnically diverse patient population and is the major teaching hospital for the Boston University School of Medicine. As the lead institution for the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmchp.org\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">BMC HealthNet Plan<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bmc.org\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>BMC<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>also serves a tertiary referral center for patients throughout New England. The Section of Hematology\/Oncology delivers cutting edge cancer care and performs high-impact research that reflects and benefits our increasingly diverse society, fulfilling <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bmc.org\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Boston Medical Center\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> <\/span>broader mission of providing<strong> \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>exceptional care without exception<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Faculty<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hematology\/files\/2019\/11\/Breast20Cancer20Clinic-1-402x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2669 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2019\/11\/Breast20Cancer20Clinic-1-402x300.jpg 402w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2019\/11\/Breast20Cancer20Clinic-1.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medicine\/faculty\/directory\/?section=hematology-medical-oncology\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Faculty<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in the section include internationally recognized experts in a range of fields, who have led the development of novel therapies in areas such as amyloidosis, neuroendocrine tumors, and sickle cell disease. Faculty are integral members of specialized multi-disciplinary cancer programs in gastrointestinal oncology, thoracic oncology, head and neck oncology, breast and gynecologic oncology, cutaneous oncology, genitourinary oncology, and hematologic malignancies. The cancer program is accredited by the ACS Commission on Cancer. \u00a0A robust hematology program includes the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/amyloid\/\" style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Amyloidoisis Center<\/span><\/strong><\/a>,<\/span> which is internationally recognized as a leader in research and treatment of AL amyloidosis. The <strong>Stem Cell Transplant Program<\/strong> provides care for patients with amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia and is accredited by the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.factwebsite.org\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sicklecell\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The Sickle Cell Center of Excellence <\/strong><\/a><\/span>has a longstanding history of breakthroughs and impact in sickle cell research and care<strong>, <\/strong>and serves the largest sickle cell population in New England.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-451x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3584 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/hematology\/files\/2020\/08\/20-1114-MEDWEB2-003-2048x1363.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/>Strong and expanding basic and clinical research programs within the section of hematology and oncology build on the strengths of the broader research community within the<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Boston University School of Medicine<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Boston University<\/span><\/a><\/strong>. Faculty in the section lead a range major research initiatives, ranging from epidemiologic investigations in the Black Women\u2019s Health Study to innovations in stem cell biology. Investigators collaborate closely and are supported by the <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/slone\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Slone Epidemiology Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shipley\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">The Shipley Prostate Cancer Research Center<\/a><\/span>, the Dahod Center for Breast Cancer Research, <\/strong>and the <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dbin\/stemcells\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\">Center for Regenerative Medicine<\/a><\/span>. <\/strong>They utilize an extensive range of core facilities, including the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/singlecell\/\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Single Cell Sequencing Core<\/strong><\/a> <\/span>as well as resources within the NIH funded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctsi\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Clinical and Translational Science Institute<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Boston<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">University School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><\/strong>. Collaborating with the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm-pathology\/\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Department of Pathology<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, the <strong>Translational Oncology Laboratory<\/strong> within the Section of Hematology\/Oncology provides seamless support for patient consent and biobanking to support research initiatives.
