{"id":92861,"date":"2023-04-11T11:55:47","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T15:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?p=92861"},"modified":"2023-04-11T12:29:29","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T16:29:29","slug":"introducing-our-2023-commencement-speakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/2023\/04\/11\/introducing-our-2023-commencement-speakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing Our 2023 Commencement Speakers!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/commencement\/\">Commencement<\/a> fast approaching, we would like to take a moment to highlight the four students who have been selected to speak at this year\u2019s Graduate Medical Sciences ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Three students were chosen to speak at the Master\u2019s Ceremony, and one student was chosen to represent GMS at the MD, PhD &amp; MD\/PhD Ceremony. He then moved to Toronto, Ontario for four years before moving to Calgary, Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Eaba moved to the Boston area to matriculate into the GMS Masters in Oral Health Sciences program in 2022. Earlier this academic year, he was accepted into the DMD program at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where he will continue his path toward a career in dentistry in July.<\/p>\n<p>Eaba told us that some of his best memories from his time at BU have come from meeting new people and sharing similar experiences with the people in his program. He also credits his OHS program leaders with facilitating a successful year in the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have noticed that every BU faculty member that I have spoken to has had this trait of [genuineness] and kindness,\u201d Eaba said. \u201cThese traits\u00a0provide comfort and allow for organic conversions to transpire when speaking with faculty. I hope that our graduation class remembers that these traits go much further\u00a0than we imagine\u00a0at time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If there was one piece of advice Eaba would give to other GMS students pursuing a similar path, it\u2019s this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no growth in comfortability.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-636x636.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" class=\" wp-image-92864 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-636x636.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-550x550.png 550w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-710x710.png 710w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1020074-1.png 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/>Darilyn Mahoney<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Masters in Genetic Counseling Program<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Originally from Beltsville, MD, Darilyn moved to Boston in the fall of 2021 to join the Genetic Counseling Program\u2019s 11-person class of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Darilyn told us that what she loved most about her time at BU were the connections she made within the tight-knit genetic counseling community at GMS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never expected to form the friendships and bonds I have with my program,\u201d Darilyn said. \u201cThe amount of support and warmth is insurmountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following Commencement, Darilyn is returning home to the Washington D.C. area. She moved to the Boston area in 2015 to attend Boston University for her undergraduate studies and matriculated into the MAMS program in 2021. There, she has found great success as a student and a researcher.<\/p>\n<p>Erika is a recipient of a 2023 GMS Outstanding Student Achievement Award, specifically awarded in the Master\u2019s Research Achievement category.<\/p>\n<p>Following Commencement, Erika will continue her research on vascular endothelial health in type 2 diabetes in the vascular biology section at the Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Erika credits her classmates with providing some of her best memories at BU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved learning with my classmates,\u201d Erika said. \u201cEveryone was incredibly motivated, and my class had a great energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Offering advice to other GMS students pursuing a similar path, Erika encourages them \u201cto remember that we have amazing mentors around us who are always willing to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-636x636.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" class=\" wp-image-92863 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-636x636.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-550x550.png 550w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-710x710.png 710w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2023\/04\/P1010935-1.png 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/>Michael Breen<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>PhD in Microbiology, Program in Biomedical Sciences<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Michael is a proud Massachusetts resident from Bolton, MA.<\/p>\n<p>He matriculated into the Program in Biomedical Sciences before joining the Microbiology program for his dissertation research. He defended his dissertation, \u201cExtravascular B Cell Populations in the Influenza A Virus Experienced Lung,&#8221; earlier in the academic year and graduated in January 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoston University has given me the freedom to research topics I was passionate about,\u201d Michael said. \u201cIt also provided me with an excellent mentorship team that helped me develop numerous cutting-edge skills that are required for the advanced world of science today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael has accepted a scientist position at the Cambridge-area vaccine company Tiba Biotech. There, he plans to put all of the skills he gained during his time at GMS to work helping the company improve the lives of patients in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Michael credits the friends he has made at BU with making his experience memorable and told us that he looks forward to all of their successes.<\/p>\n<p>One piece of advice Michael would give other GMS students? \u201cPut yourself out there, follow whatever path excites you and have fun doing it!\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Congratulations to our Commencement speakers!
