On this date slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Also frequently referred to as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is already celebrated in most states. This is the first year it is an official holiday in the state of Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/busm\/files\/2021\/06\/shutterstock_1419955064.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/busm\/files\/2021\/06\/shutterstock_1419955064-636x382.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"382\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-95308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>As of this year, Boston University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2021\/bu-adds-juneteenth-as-an-annual-holiday-in-university-calendar-antiracist-makeover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now recognizes Juneteenth<\/a> as an official holiday as part of ongoing efforts to become more diverse, equitable and inclusive. The United States Senate and House of Representatives approved a bill that would make Juneteenth a legal public holiday, and the measure is expected to be approved by President Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>BU is hosting various online webinars and events to allow our community to engage with and learn more about this important day &#8211; find a list of programming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/alumni\/2021\/06\/10\/blog_juneteenth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To learn more about Juneteenth, we recommend listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-juneteenth-mixtape\/id1564144316?i=1000525699682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Juneteenth Mixtape<\/a> episode of the new podcast, <em>Be Antiracist with Ibram X Kendi<\/em>.
