But in Fadie Coleman, Collard found a mentor who\u2019d taught students from college to middle and high school\u2014and was only too happy to teach a fellow teacher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-447x636.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"636\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-79055 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-447x636.jpeg 447w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-719x1024.jpeg 719w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-768x1094.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-1079x1536.jpeg 1079w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024-1438x2048.jpeg 1438w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2021\/05\/Resize-21-1136-COLEMAN-024.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met with Dr. Coleman weekly, where she helped me refine my syllabus, plan class lessons, and evaluate students\u2019 learning,\u201d providing guidance that was \u201cexceptional,\u201d Collard wrote in a letter nominating<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.bu.edu\/Fadie.Coleman\">Coleman<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(CAS\u201997, MED\u201916), a MED assistant professor of medical sciences and education, for a 2021<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/provost\/awards-publications\/award-opportunities\/university-wide-teaching-awards\/metcalf\/\">Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching<\/a>, one of Boston University\u2019s highest teaching honors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps Dr. Coleman\u2019s most admirable quality,\u201d Collard wrote, \u201cis her advocacy for diversity and equality. As a person of color herself, Dr. Coleman understands and empathizes with struggles minority students face, which comprise the majority of the BLCS program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BLCS is the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/degrees-certificates\/bs-biomedical-laboratory-clinical-sciences\/\">Biomedical Laboratory &amp; Clinical Sciences Program<\/a>, a collaboration between MED and Metropolitan College, which offers evening classes for working students seeking bachelor\u2019s degrees in biotechnology.
