{"id":75383,"date":"2020-09-03T04:02:59","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T08:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?p=75383"},"modified":"2020-09-18T12:56:16","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T16:56:16","slug":"gms-pathology-students-help-with-covid-19-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/2020\/09\/03\/gms-pathology-students-help-with-covid-19-research\/","title":{"rendered":"GMS Pathology Students Help With COVID-19 Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2020\/09\/20200903_111840-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"594\" class=\"wp-image-75384 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>During the 2020 SARS CoV-2 pandemic Pathology &amp; Laboratory Sciences graduate students past and present stepped up to support the department in a major way.\u00a0<\/span><strong><u><span>Manisha Cole\u00a0(GMS 2021)<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>and recent graduates\u00a0<\/span><strong><u><span>Kyle de la Cena (GMS 2020)<\/span><\/u><\/strong>, <strong><u><span>Carolina Lyon de Ana (MS 2017, PhD candidate)<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>and<\/span><strong><u><span>\u00a0Morgan Thompson (2017)<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>were instrumental in setting up and supporting the BMC-BU Covid 19 biobank initiative, led by faculty member\u00a0<\/span><strong><u><span>Assistant<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong><u><span>Professor\u00a0Elizabeth R Duffy (GMS 2009<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span>).\u00a0 This team has processed thousands of discarded human biospecimens to ensure that sufficient Cov-2 related material is available to research scientists.\u00a0 Some of this material was also used by the BU SARS CoV-2 \u00a0testing laboratory during set up and validation of their test.\u00a0 In addition, this team is supporting a longitudinal study of patients with Covid infection funded by the Mass Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (PI Nahid Bhadelia, MD).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally on a project led by Assistant Professor in Pathology &amp; Laboratory Medicine and student mentor Yachana Kataria, PhD, Liz Duffy, Manisha Cole and Kyle de la Cena prepared, initiated and led two hospital wide SARS Cov-2 seroprevalance studies called SIG-COV (PI Yachana Kataria) and STOP (PI Karen Jacobson). Over 1,700 employees registered to have their blood drawn and antibodies tested.
