Applications generally end around the first of December each year. Applicants to PiBS will need to create an account with the Boston University Centralized Application System (BU-GMS CAS), and then complete or upload all personal, academic and supporting documentation. During the application process you will select &#8220;PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences&#8221; as your program of choice (you are applying through the centralized PiBS admissions, rather than directly to Nutrition &amp; Metabolism). The Admissions Committee will select competitive applicants to attend one of two interview days sometime in late January-February. You will be notified of the committee\u2019s decision via email following the last interview day.<\/p>\n<h4>Requirements:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Course pre-requisites:<\/strong> no specific undergraduate major is required but a strong background in biomedical science is suggested including the following:\n<ul>\n<li>one year of biology and chemistry<\/li>\n<li>one or two semesters of organic chemistry<\/li>\n<li>advanced coursework such as biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, physiology and\/or genetics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Experience: <\/strong>a strong research background will be very beneficial to your application. Please describe your research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three letters of recommendation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>No minimum\u00a0GPA<\/strong> is required, but the most competitive applicants will have a science GPA above 3.5.<\/li>\n<li><span>Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS results must be submitted for applicants who received their degrees in a non-English-speaking country. This requirement is waived only if you have received, or expect to receive, an undergraduate or graduate degree from a college or university in any of the following countries prior to enrollment in GMS: the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, or Ireland.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For\u00a0answers to questions about admission to the PhD program, visit\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/nutrition-metabolism\/admissions\/phdfaq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PhD Frequently Asked Questions<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Funding<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<p>Students in the PiBS program receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/academics\/phd-programs\/phd-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full funding for tuition and fee<\/a>s as well as a $46,350 stipend\u00a0per year. In addition to the stipend for living expenses, students will be provided with health insurance options.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">PhD Admissions Portal<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<p>You will need to apply through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/pibs\/admissions\/\">PiBS Admissions portal<\/a>.\u00a0 The PiBS application deadline for Fall 2026 admission is <strong>December 1, 2025<\/strong>.
