{"id":86929,"date":"2022-06-01T10:12:36","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T14:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?page_id=86929"},"modified":"2026-04-07T11:21:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T15:21:29","slug":"turnitin","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/academics\/research-thesis-dissertation\/turnitin\/","title":{"rendered":"Turnitin Access To Plagiarism Check For GMS Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turnitin is an online plagiarism checking tool that compares your work with existing online publications.<\/p>\n<h4>To gain access:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Request\u00a0<span><\/span>access<span><\/span>\u00a0to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/request-to-be-added-to-blackboard-plagiarism-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plagiarism-Check Blackboard site<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Access to this site will be continuous throughout your time in GMS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>How it works:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Upload your papers to Blackboard Learn to check for similarity index<\/li>\n<li>Submit\u00a0<span>multiple versions of papers, take home assignments, theses or dissertations and rewrite text\u00a0as needed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Extended Directions:<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Having personal Turnitin access through Blackboard Learn allows you to confidentially check your written work for potential plagiarism.\u00a0 With a close inspection of the results Turnitin may also help with incorrect quotation and missing citations.\u00a0 Turnitin for GMS graduate students:\n<ul>\n<li>Students are provided access to this Turnitin site when matriculating to GMS.\u00a0 Students should search their Blackboard site for &#8220;plagiarism&#8221; and see if they have access.\u00a0 If not, then follow this link to request access: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/request-to-be-added-to-blackboard-plagiarism-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plagiarism-Check Blackboard site<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>You will be asked to give your name, email BUID and the submission type (i.e. Dissertation, Thesis or Paper) and your GMS program affiliation.<\/li>\n<li>After verifying you are not a robot, you be should sent to a new page and get a notification saying \u201cWe have received your request to be added to the plagiarism check Blackboard Learn site.\u201d<br \/>\nIt will take some time for your request to be approved (at least 10 min, possibly 24 hr).<br \/>\nThe next time you log in to Blackboard, under \u2018My Courses\u2019 in the right-hand column you should see the entry:\u00a0 \u201cGMS Plagiarism Check\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To submit a document, click on \u201cTurnitin Submission\u201d on the left-hand panel of the Blackboard site\n<ul>\n<li>Then click on \u201c&gt;&gt; View\/Complete\u201d\u00a0 (The first time you use Turnitin it will ask you to agree the user agreement).<br \/>\nIf you have never submitted a document before there should be a submit button.\u00a0 If you have submitted before you will need to click the resubmit button to submit your new or revised document.\u00a0 You may get a warning that resubmitting will replace your earlier submission.\u00a0 It also reminds you that you can only upload 3 documents in 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li>You can browse to find the document on your computer then click \u2018upload\u2019<\/li>\n<li>You will get a message saying it may take up to 2-min to load<\/li>\n<li>Once the document is loaded be sure to click on \u2018confirm\u2019<\/li>\n<li>You should get a congratulatory message.\u00a0 (You will also get an email confirming the successful submission.)<\/li>\n<li>Click on the link to return to submission list<\/li>\n<li>You will likely see that your document \u2018similarity\u2019 index is \u2018processing.\u2019\u00a0 The algorithm may take a few hours to run.\u00a0 You will need check back and see when it has finished.<\/li>\n<li>When Turnitin has completed its work, the status will be changed, and on the \u201cView\/Complete\u201d page and will get a similarity index.\u00a0 Click on the number to view the similarity.\u00a0 The lower this index, the better.\n<ul>\n<li>Press \u201cview\u201d on the far right to see the submitted manuscript with Turnitin\u2019s Feedback Studio which has some interesting automation features.<\/li>\n<li>Alternatively, you can download the results with the arrow icon on the far right of the display<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>NOTE:\u00a0 Students cannot submit more than 3 documents in a 24hour period.\u00a0 Please plan accordingly or use an alternatively resource like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dli\/2021\/07\/22\/turnitin-draft-coach-for-google-docs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Turnitin Draft Coach alternative via Google Doc<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Tip &amp; Problems:<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is recommended that you remove the bibliography\/references prior to submission to Turnitin.<\/li>\n<li>Because Turnitin cannot scan Images and Figures these can also be removed prior to the check. You must manually check images and figures for plagiarism and potential copyright violations.<\/li>\n<li>It is acceptable to include your published (or soon to be submitted for publication) manuscript as a chapter in your thesis or dissertation. If you choose to include your published manuscript, you should include a disclaimer at the beginning of the chapter. Ex: \u201cDisclaimer: Data and portions of the text in this chapter were originally published as: Costanza, G. and Benes, E. (2018) Uromycitisis, a follow up report. J. Urinary Maladies.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Published manuscripts should be removed from your thesis or dissertation prior to submission to Turnitin, assuming that they have already been analyzed by Turnitin. If they have not been, they should be included. Unpublished manuscripts should be included in your submission to Turnitin. \u2022 How to interpret a \u201cTurnitin Originality Report\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Problems:<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are having difficulty submitted a second or third trial of a paper\/thesis, please wait a couple hours before trying again.\u00a0 Clear your cache and try a different browser.\u00a0 Often that will solve the problem.\u00a0 Students should be able to upload a draft 3 times in 24 hours, but sometimes you need to do need to clear your cache or change browsers to be successful<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having problems with Turnitin, especially due to previous publications raising your similarity index,\u00a0 please reach out <span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a href=\"mailto:tdavies@bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\" rel=\"noopener\">tdavies@bu.edu<\/a> <\/span>for assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">How to Interpret Your Score Report:<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turnitin returns:\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Similarity index, Similarity by Source, Internet Sources, Publications, &amp; Student Papers<\/li>\n<li>Generally, the similarity index should be less than 20%.<\/li>\n<li>A low similarity index does not necessarily mean that there are not any passages in the document that need correcting. It is important to look at every identified similarity and determine why it has been flagged.\n<ul>\n<li>A common definition may be acceptable.<\/li>\n<li>Did it identify methods or protocols from your lab? These will need to be rewritten.<\/li>\n<li>Did it identify matches to publications or text from the internet\u2014again these sentences, paragraphs,\u00a0 sections will need to be rewritten<\/li>\n<li>If you have any questions interpreting the Turnitin report please reach out to your faculty mentors.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have made edits it is important to resubmit the document for a final check.<\/li>\n<li>The final Turnitin report should be submitted to your mentor and first reader for approval.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turnitin is an online plagiarism checking tool that compares your work with existing online publications.
