{"id":66676,"date":"2019-06-22T15:26:37","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T19:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?page_id=66676"},"modified":"2026-08-14T17:19:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T21:19:17","slug":"organization","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/","title":{"rendered":"GMS Student Organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/book-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-86045\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Student Organizations<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The GMS student organizations are overseen by an advisory board consisting of representatives from the master&#8217;s and PhD programs, faculty, staff, and members of our respective student groups.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Biomedical PhD Student Organization (BPSO)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/bpso\/\">Biomedical PhD Student Organization<\/a> (BPSO) aims to build and strengthen the community among PhD programs at BUMC and to cultivate camaraderie among Biomedical Science PhD students.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boston University Science Policy Network (BUSPN)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/stepup\">BU Science Policy Network<\/a> group at Boston University is committed to fostering a community of scientists engaged in public policy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BU Biotech Consulting Club (BBCC)\u00a0<\/strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/bbcc\/\">BU Biotech Consulting Club<\/a>\u00a0is for advance degree students at Boston University to work on case studies in life sciences and biotech, and provide career development toward the consulting industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Graduate Medical Sciences Student Organization (GMSSO)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/gmsso\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate Medical Sciences Student Organization\u00a0<\/a>(GMSSO) organizes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/about\/gms-in-the-community\/\">volunteer<\/a> and social events in addition to advocating for the student population.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minority and International Scientists Organization (MISO)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/miso\/\">Minority and International Scientists Organization<\/a> provides a supportive and enriched environment to the diverse population of Boston University scientists via various social and academic events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student Advisory Board<br \/>\n<\/strong>The GMS Student Advisory Board meets a few times per semester to discuss pressing issues with the GMS Staff that impact all graduate student life at BUMC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student Wellness Committee (SWC)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/student-wellness-committee\/\">Student Wellness Committee<\/a> provides wellness resources and activities in collaboration with GMS Student Affairs and other BUMC Student Affairs offices to all GMS students.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Women&#8217;s Professional Development Committee (WPDC)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/wpdc\">Women&#8217;s Professional Development Committee<\/a> provides a supportive space to host professional development opportunities for graduate-level women in science at Boston University through establishing and cultivating a network of exemplary mentorship with women in a diversity of scientific careers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disability Advocacy Group (gDAG)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><span>The Disability Advocacy Group\u2019s community network seeks to promote awareness and a deeper sense of belonging for those with mental and\/or physical disabilities at GMS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>Students of Color Community Network (gSOC)<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/strong><\/strong>The\u00a0<em>g<\/em>SOC community network seeks to support and advance students of color through collaboration, celebration, empathy, and knowledge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First-Generation Students (gFIRST)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>The\u00a0<em>g<\/em>FIRST (first-generation students) community network seeks to support and advance the outcomes of first-gen college students across the GMS programs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Military-Affiliated &amp; Veteran Students (gMAV)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>The\u00a0<em>g<\/em>MAV (military-affiliated and veteran students) community network seeks to promote a deeper sense of belonging and recognition for military-affiliated and veteran students by celebrating their multidimensional experiences across the GMS programs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LGBTQIA+ Community (gPLUS)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>The\u00a0<em>g<\/em>PLUS (LGBTQIA+ students) community network seeks to promote a deeper sense of belonging and celebrate the multiple identities among LGBTQIA+ students across the GMS programs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International Students Community Network (gGLOBAL)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>The\u00a0<em>g<\/em>GLOBAL community network seeks to advance the outcomes of international students across the GMS programs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pregnant &amp; Parenting Student Network (gFAMILY)<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><span>The gFAMILY community network seeks to provide resources and support to current students who are or planning to be parents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Traditional Graduate Student Community<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>The Non-Traditional Graduate Student Community seeks to provide resources and support to current students who\u00a0may consider themselves non-traditional learners. Please review the guidelines that clarify the <a href=\"\/gms\/files\/2020\/05\/Professional-Relationship-Between-Liaison-and-Student-Organization.pdf\">Professional Relationship Between Liaison and Student Organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Organization Meeting &amp; Events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All student organizations planning a meeting or event <em>MUST<\/em> submit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/student-event-request-form\/\">Student Organization Event Request Form<\/a>\u00a0at least 2 weeks prior to the event. GMS will be able to assist you best by early planning.\u00a0 If your group would like an event advertised, please fill out our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/gms-news-and-events-submission-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GMS News and Event Submission Form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All student organizations hosting an event must adhere to the <a href=\"\/gms\/files\/2022\/05\/Guidelines-for-Presence-of-Alcohol-at-Student-Events-Financial-Reimbursement-for-Alcohol-and-Food.pdf\">Guidelines for Presence of Alcohol at Student Events &amp; Financial Reimbursement for Alcohol and Food<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allocation Meetings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All student organizations will participate in an allocation meeting in the spring semester to propose a budget for the upcoming school year. Each student organization will complete the <a href=\"\/gms\/files\/2020\/04\/Student-Organization-Budget-For-2020-2021.xlsx\">Student Organization Budget Document<\/a> in advance and submit it to GMS Student Affairs (gmssa@bu.edu).
