We are deeply committed to increasing access to graduate education for groups traditionally underrepresented\u00a0in the biomedical sciences. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Every year our Diversity, Equity &amp; Inclusion team travels to conferences such as the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abrcms.org\/\">Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)<\/a><span>\u00a0and the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacnas.org\/\">Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans (SACNAS)<\/a> national conference to promote our programs and connect with diverse scholars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; padding: 3%; border-left: solid #FFCC33 5px;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2020\/06\/ABRCMS-e1635256183825.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1434\" height=\"484\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73560 \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2020\/06\/ABRCMS-e1635256183825.jpg 1452w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2020\/06\/ABRCMS-e1635256183825-636x215.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2020\/06\/ABRCMS-e1635256183825-768x259.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2020\/06\/ABRCMS-e1635256183825-1024x346.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1434px) 100vw, 1434px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Programs for PhD Graduate Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/dei\/undergraduate-summer-and-youth-programs\/emerging-scientific-scholars-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emerging Scientific Scholars Program (ESSP) <\/a><\/span>\u00a0ESSP is a professional development program for doctoral students in the biomedical sciences who are from backgrounds that have been historically excluded in the biomedical sciences. The program provides both peer and faculty mentoring to ease the transition and help students navigate the hidden curriculum of graduate school. The program is intentionally designed to strengthen each cohort as a community of scholars to increase feelings of belonging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Programs for Undergraduate Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/genetic-counseling\/aid-gc-undergraduate-internship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\">ID-GC (Alliance to Increase Diversity in Genetic Counseling) Internship<\/a>\u00a0<\/span> sponsored by the Warren Alpert Foundation: <span>The Boston University Genetic Counseling Program, located at the Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine, will offer two full-time, paid summer internships for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and populations who are interested in pursuing a genetic counseling career.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/dei\/undergraduate-summer-and-youth-programs\/bus-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\">BEST BET (funded by NSF INCLUDES)<\/a><\/span>: BEST BET draws upon the expertise of five research-intensive institutions that have developed innovative programming in career and professional development for doctoral and postdoctoral trainees in biomedical research. Together with community stakeholders, we have developed STEM initiatives and programs that primarily focus on providing high school students with educational opportunities and career choices in a variety of different public health and medical fields.
