The Simon A. Chernack Annual Conference\u00a0is conducted each year by the Healthcare Emergency Management Program at Boston University School of Medicine. This conference provides a forum for national and international emergency professionals, as well as the general public, to learn, discuss and share information about the most effective ways of planning for future crises and catastrophes and thus improve collaboration, security and health across the world.<\/p>\n

This conference is named in memory of Simon Chernack, a former student and teaching assistant of the Healthcare Emergency Management (HEM) Master of Science program at Boston University. Simon started his career in emergency management and response at a very early age,\u00a0helping his parents provide medical relief during the war in Croatia and Bosnia. Simon came to the HEM program in 2010, having completed his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Following his graduation from the HEM program, Simon became the Emergency Management Coordinator for Cook Children\u2019s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked on pandemic and plague planning. He returned to Boston as a contractor for FEMA, specializing in nuclear and chemical response planning for urban environments. He held this position until his untimely passing on November 21, 2014.<\/p>\n

Simon epitomized the values and virtues desired in an emergency management professional. This conference is a way to recognize Simon\u2019s achievements and aspirations. A scholarship has been established in his name. The goal of this scholarship is to benefit students enrolled in the Healthcare Emergency Management Master of Science degree program at Boston University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n
