{"id":37945,"date":"2014-07-10T10:27:28","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T14:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?page_id=37945"},"modified":"2026-03-24T08:00:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T12:00:42","slug":"dental-school-letter-packet-options-for-ohs-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/academics\/masters-programs\/ohs\/current-students\/dental-school-applications\/dental-school-letter-packet-options-for-ohs-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Dental School Letter Options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All OHS students applying to dental school who plan to use the GMS office to send out their letters must follow these guidelines to complete the process.\u00a0 For more information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adea.org\/godental\/letters-of-evaluation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">please see AADSAS,\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Letters of Recommendation Options<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>AADSAS states that each student is allowed <strong>4 individual letters<\/strong> OR 1<strong> Committee Letter\/Report and 3 individual letters.<\/strong> Each student should discuss the following 3 options with their advisor to determine what is best.<\/p>\n<h4>OPTION 1 :GMS Letter Report (Packet) and 3 Additional Uploaded Letters<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #a60505;\">Option <\/span><span style=\"color: #a60505;\">used by OHS students in June AFTER after completing OHS\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The OHS packet contains<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Advisor\/Program Director letter (letter submitted to AADSAS from the fall -updated-\u00a0 if you applied )<\/li>\n<li>Academic professor(s) 1-3\n<ul>\n<li>At least one from a faculty who taught a DMD course<\/li>\n<li>Additional OHS faculty letters\u00a0 (Applied Physio, Histology, Biochemistry, Physio, ID, Micro, or Prevention, etc. to highlight rigorous coursework)<\/li>\n<li>Additional extracurricular, service or research done POST undergrad<\/li>\n<li>Dentist, extracurricular activity supervisor or research mentor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 Additional letter(s) uploaded\u00a0 separately should come from<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Usually 1 from your Undergrad &#8211;\u00a0 a professor, research PI, advisor who knew you very well<\/li>\n<li>Dentist (1-2)<\/li>\n<li>Extracurricular and\/or service supervisor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>OPTION 2: Undergraduate Committee Letter and 3 Individual Letters<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #a60505;\">Option used by OHS students Prior to Matriculating to OHS\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Undergraduate Committee Letter \/ Letter Packet contains<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Committee letter or letter packet sent directly from your undergraduate pre-professional advising office includes a combination of recommender comments and\/or letters from\u00a0 professors. This may or may not include comments from extracurriculars supervisors and\/or a dentist. NOTE: Some schools do not offer this option and will need to use OPTION 3 below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong> Additional letter(s) MAY be uploaded separately (but may not be needed)\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Dentist (1-2) if not included in packet\/committee letter<\/li>\n<li>Extracurricular and\/or service if not included in packet\/committee letter<\/li>\n<li>It is RECOMMEDED that incoming OHS students L<strong>EAVE one open individual LETTER SPOT OPEN for the OHS Program to send a letter November 1st<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The letter will likely be a combine Program Director\/Advisor Letter but could also be a GMS professor (discussed in the fall with your advisor as needed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OPTION 3: 4 Individual Letter Writers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #a60505;\">Option used by OHS students Prior to Matriculating to OHS if School Does NOT have the Packet \/Committee Letter Option (Option i)<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each individual letter writer uploads their recommendations directly to AADSAS.<\/li>\n<li>Most schools require 2 science professors and 1 dentists<\/li>\n<li>If possible students should submit 2 science professor letters and a dentist and <strong>LEAVE one open individual LETTER SPOT for the OHS Program to send a letter November 1st<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The 1 letter will likely be a combine Program Director\/Advisor Letter but could also be a GMS professor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is harder to leave a letter spot open for OHS using this option but students can also have their November OHS advisor\/program letters emailed directly to schools with about 75% of dental schools accepting additional letters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">OHS Students: Completion of the LOR Section of AADSAS and Finalization of your GMS Letter Packet\/Report<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h4>ALL letters will be uploaded\u00a0<strong>electronically by the OHS program to AADSAS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>1. In May \/June\/early July (for students reapplying in June) <\/strong>provide OHS with the completed <a href=\"\/gms\/files\/2011\/07\/OHS-LETTER-REQUEST-FORM.pdf\">OHS Letter Request Form<\/a>. This form includes your signature which will serve as your &#8216;waiver&#8217; for all letters forwarded to GMS. Please sign the form. It can be\u00a0 or emailed to <a href=\"mailto:ohsdocs@bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ohsdocs@bu.edu<\/a> directly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Complete the AADSAS application in the following manner:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check the box that indicates you will be submitting a Committee Letter\/Report (if multiple letters) or Individual letter (if Individual letter only) and <strong>indicate electronic when prompted<\/strong>.
