(fall, spring, Sum 1 &amp; Sum 2).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compliance:<\/strong> All students must meet the following\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/registration\/requirements\/\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\">compliance requirements<\/a><\/span> \u2013 <i>BU Alert System,\u00a0<\/i><i>Medical Immunization Status,\u00a0<\/i><i>Student Account Payment,\u00a0<\/i><i>Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law,\u00a0Local Address and Sexual Misconduct Prevention.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><strong>Academic Advising:<\/strong> Prior to registering on-line for classes, students must meet with their Advisor\/Program Director to discuss course selection.\u00a0 Some GMS courses are restricted from on-line registration.\u00a0 For these courses, students must submit a GMS Student Online form via the web page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Students may NOT register for PDP classes, undergraduate courses or unapproved graduate courses at other BU colleges. <\/strong>These courses will not count towards a graduate degree.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Students may NOT register for or audit courses<\/strong> in other colleges at the University, this excludes PhD Students.\u00a0 Permission required for SPH Courses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dropping Classes:<\/strong> Dropping a course indicates that you are still enrolled in one or more courses at GMS. Students may drop standard courses online using the <span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mybu\/\" style=\"color: #0066cc;\">MyBU<\/a><\/span> or by submitting an online Add\/drop form following approval by advisor without academic penalty up to the designated drop deadline. Upon written petition to the Associate Provost for GMS and for appropriate\u00a0cause, a student is allowed up to a total of two (2) semesters of leaves [or for a total of one (1)\u00a0academic year] of absence throughout degree completion without the necessity of reapplication\u00a0and\/or readmission.<\/li>\n<li>Leaves of absence beyond two (2) semesters are granted only in exceptional cases, such as a\u00a0substantiated illness, maternity or paternity leave, or military service. The student should petition to\u00a0the Associate Provost of GMS with the approval of the program director.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure for requests for a leave of absence is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student should meet with their advisor and program director for approval.<\/li>\n<li>Submit a written request explaining the reason for leave of absence along with the required forms, including the program director\u2019s signature, to the GMS Registrar.<\/li>\n<li>May be asked to meet with GMS Associate Dean. If approved, a request for a leave of absence is effective on the day the written request is received by the GMS Registrar.<\/li>\n<li>A certificate of authorized leave of absence is issued and a copy is included in\u00a0the student\u2019s record. For a student who files for a leave of absence from the University before\u00a0classes start, charges for tuition and fees are canceled in accordance with the University\u2019s published\u00a0refund schedule.<\/li>\n<li>A student who is on a leave of absence and who has borrowed federal and\/or private loans may be\u00a0required to begin repayment while on leave.\u00a0The period of an authorized leave of absence is counted as a part of the total time allowed for\u00a0completion of the degree requirements. Students may not complete any degree requirements in a\u00a0semester for which they have been granted a leave of absence.<\/li>\n<li>Students on an F-1\/J-1 visa, are required to contact ISSO (isso@bu.edu) to discuss immigration implications of your potential Leave of Absence or Withdrawal.<\/li>\n<li>All PhD students requesting a Leave of Absence from GMS should meet with the Associate Provost. Please contact Sarah Mlynek at 617-358-9516 or <a href=\"mailto:samlynek@bu.edu\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">samlynek@bu.edu<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to schedule an appointment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Leaves of Absence for Medical Reasons<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes a student may need to interrupt his or her studies for medical reasons. A student\u00a0requesting a leave of absence for medical reasons must submit a letter from their clinician, or s\/he must be seen (or have the records reviewed) by Student Health Services or its designee. GMS\u00a0reserves the right to require an involuntary medical leave of absence if it is determined that a\u00a0student\u2019s continued enrollment would create a significant risk to the health and safety of the\u00a0student or others.<\/li>\n<li>A student seeking to re-enroll after a medical leave of absence must demonstrate to GMS that the\u00a0student\u2019s health permits the successful completion of studies. Documentation needed to support\u00a0this finding will be determined by Student Health Services or its designee, but will generally include\u00a0information from the student\u2019s clinician as well as an assessment by Student Health Services or its\u00a0designee. The decision whether to permit a student to re-enroll is within the sole discretion of GMS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Withdrawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A student who wishes to withdraw from the University must follow the below procedures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meet with their advisor and program director for approval.<\/li>\n<li>Submit a written request explaining the reason for withdrawal along with the required forms, including the program director\u2019s signature, to the GMS Registrar.<\/li>\n<li>Students on an F-1\/J-1 visa must contact ISSO (isso@bu.edu) to discuss immigration implications.<\/li>\n<li>May be asked to meet with GMS Associate Dean.<\/li>\n<li>If approved, a withdrawal is effective on the day it is received by the GMS Registrar and charges are canceled in accordance with the University\u2019s published refund schedule, based on the effective date of the student\u2019s withdrawal.<\/li>\n<li>Absence from class does not reduce financial obligations or guarantee that final grades will not be recorded.\u00a0<span>Please follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/studentfinancials\/resources\/withdrawal-and-tuition-refund-schedule\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">refund calendar<\/span><\/a><span> for key dates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>All PhD students requesting a withdrawal from GMS should meet with the Associate Dean.
