{"id":27669,"date":"2013-03-11T10:16:02","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T14:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?page_id=27669"},"modified":"2020-09-24T15:45:34","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T19:45:34","slug":"instrumentation-and-facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/bmfs\/instrumentation-and-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Research, Facilities, and Instrumentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gms\/files\/2018\/01\/ALS-exam-e1515622160596.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5280\" height=\"2243\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57271\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students in Boston University&#8217;s\u00a0Biomedical Forensic Sciences program have access to a wide array of research\u00a0facilities and state-of-the-art equipment housed within our\u00a0Chemistry, Biology, DNA and Microscopy laboratories.\u00a0All students obtain extensive instrumentation and analytical experience through their required laboratory courses and independent research.<\/p>\n<h4>Crime Scene Facilities<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students learn the fundamentals regarding crime scene investigation, documentation and chain of custody records by processing a mock crime scene at our 3-bedroom crime scene house, set on a 30 acre property that includes a barn and pond.<\/p>\n<h4>Laboratories<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Forensic DNA Laboratories:<\/strong> Students learn the fundamentals of human identity testing by utilizing advanced techniques such as laser microdissection, qPCR, DNA sequencing and STR fragment analysis. Emphasis is\u00a0placed on analysis of complex DNA mixtures.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratories:<\/strong> Students learn to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize materials such as controlled substances, ignitable liquids, hairs, fibers and other solid state materials via the use of GC\/MS, LC\/MS-MS, FTIR, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and microscopy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Biology and Dark Room Laboratories:<\/strong> Students practice general evidence examination\u00a0and documentation including the use of alternate light sources and comparison quality photography.\u00a0They learn biological screening using wet-chemical techniques, immunoassays and microscopy.
