{"id":27667,"date":"2013-03-11T10:14:46","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T14:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/?page_id=27667"},"modified":"2024-12-13T15:58:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T20:58:13","slug":"ga","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/bmfs\/admissions\/financial-aid\/ga\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Assistantships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BMFS Graduate Assistantships are part-time positions that involve students in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of laboratories and research activities in the program.\u00a0 Some positions are paid and others are unpaid but serve as a capstone activity for specialized track completion.<\/p>\n<h4>Types of BMFS Graduate Assistantships:<\/h4>\n<h4>Forensic Biology Teaching Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Performing a run-through of each lab experiment in advance<\/li>\n<li>Setting up lab stations each week on morning of lab class<\/li>\n<li>Preparing chemicals and unknown samples<\/li>\n<li>Placing and keeping track of orders for chemicals and equipment<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining lab organization and cleanliness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 704<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Criminalistics Research Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparing mock evidence\/crime scenes and\u00a0hands-on exercises for GMS FS 701, 706, 800 and 840<\/li>\n<li>Assisting students during lab exercises as needed<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining lab organization and cleanliness<\/li>\n<li>Researching new methods\/techniques that can be incorporated into future exercises<\/li>\n<li>Accessioning\u00a0and preserving donated biological samples<\/li>\n<li>Calibrating laboratory equipment and ordering supplies<\/li>\n<li>Chemical and biohazards waste management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 701<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Instrumental Analysis Laboratory Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>C<span>leaning glassware and maintaining the cleanliness of the laboratory\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Preparing solutions\u00a0and ordering supplies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Assisting with preparation of lab exercises prior to class<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Assisting students with data processing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 708<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Multimedia Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Video recording of mock testimony exercises<\/li>\n<li>Photography of program events<\/li>\n<li>Assisting with designing and editing online\u00a0or printed material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have expertise in photography, videography and\/or imaging software<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organizing chemicals\/supplies\/equipment pertaining to the course<\/li>\n<li>Preparing chemicals and\/or specific bloodstain patterns when needed<\/li>\n<li>Setting up each experiment prior to class<\/li>\n<li>Uploading digital photos from the lab experiments each day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 713<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Forensic Chemistry Research Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>M<span>aintaining inventory and ordering the laboratory supplies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Calibrating, carrying out\u00a0maintenance and coordinating instrument service<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Assisting first year students with with training and method development for their research<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 703<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>DNA Laboratory Assistant<\/h4>\n<p>Typical duties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aiding in general laboratory maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Solution preparation<\/li>\n<li>QC of 7500 RT-PCR instrumentation, 9700 thermal-cycler, inventory maintenance, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Available to to current students who have successfully completed GMS FS 721<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BMFS Graduate Assistantships are part-time positions that involve students in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of laboratories and research activities in the program.\u00a0 Some positions are paid and others are unpaid but serve as a capstone activity for specialized track completion.
