To this end, we emphasize mentorship and professional development; our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/files\/2009\/07\/Fair-expectations_Grad-final1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Expectations<\/a> (.PDF) reinforce these underlying principles.<\/p>\n<p>GMS encourages students to present their work at scientific conferences and offers professional development workshops to help students launch their scientific careers.\u00a0 Additionally students can apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/student-life\/organization\/gmsso\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GMSSO Professional Development award<\/a> or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/osfs\/cost-of-attendance-bot\/graduate-medical-sciences\/funding-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fellowships<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/academics\/phd-programs\/phd-funding\/scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scholarships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The GMS Office hosts special events such as the endowed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/academics\/phd-programs\/russek-student-achievement-day\/past-russek-achievement-days\/23rd-annual-henry-i-russek-student-achievement-day-april-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry I. Russek Achievement Day<\/a> to celebrate student research accomplishments,\u00a0 GMS art show and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/student-life\/student-life\/student-organizations\/creative-arts-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUSM Arts Day<\/a> to showcase the artistic talents of all members of our community,\u00a0 as well as workshops and panel discussions events through the<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gms\/students\/professional-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> GMS Professional Development Office<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> BU&#8217;s BEST<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to learn about the many diverse career paths for a PhD in the biological sciences and Hockey Night to cheer the BU team on to victory.<\/p>\n<p>The GMS Office collaborates with the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/oma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affair<\/a>s to foster an appreciation of cultural competence and health disparities and their role in biomedical science research.<\/p>\n<p>Please visit our Office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pdpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Post-doctoral Affairs<\/a>\u00a0 for\u00a0 page for additional opportunities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Graduate Medical Sciences is committed to making your life at BU a positive and nurturing experience.
