We are at the forefront of innovations in primary care, addiction medicine, preventative medicine, palliative care, immigrant and refugee health, women\u2019s health, and more.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #33ab9d;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #00837b;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/gim\/files\/2024\/06\/Stethoscope.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"55\" height=\"55\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gim\/files\/2024\/06\/Stethoscope.png 139w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/gim\/files\/2024\/06\/Stethoscope-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 55px) 100vw, 55px\" \/> <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #00837b;\">Clinical Units<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The GIM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmc.org\/adult-primary-care\"><strong>primary care practice<\/strong><\/a> is made up of faculty physicians, nurse practitioners, medical residents, and staff providing care to a diverse population of patients. All faculty physicians are board-certified in Internal Medicine and several have additional certifications and expertise in sub-specialty areas. Our research activities include a wide range of innovative studies in addiction science, patient navigation, community engagement, sexual and gender minority health, chronic musculoskeletal diseases, and more. GIM\u2019s focus is to stimulate and increase education innovation in multiple domains, developing the next generation of leaders in clinical care, research, and education. GIM faculty make up the majority of the Academy of Medical Educators as well as most of residency leadership, leading the way as educators.<\/p>\n<p>GIM\u2019s current fellowship programs include:<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Academic Primary Care\/Health Services Research<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"> Since 1998 we have been providing fellows the expertise in research and education needed to enhance academic medical settings and better equip health services researchers of the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The overarching goal of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medfellowship\/\">fellowship program<\/a> is to: <em>Prepare highly motivated and well qualified General Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatric, and Surgical fellows to serve as academic faculty and perform high-quality research on topics relevant to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective primary care to underserved, high risk populations.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Addiction Medicine<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"> <\/span>In 2011, we launched one of the nation\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/care\/education-and-training-programs\/care-program-fellowship-in-addiction-medicine\/\">Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program<\/a> focused on addressing the complex needs of patients with SUDs, co-morbid mental health and medical conditions, and adverse social determinants of health. We were one of the first addiction medicine fellowship programs to be accredited by the ACGME in 2018. The mission of the Grayken Fellowship in Addiction Medicine is to: <em>Prepare physician leaders for careers in Addiction Medicine who will improve the health and wellness of people who use substances through clinical care, research, education, advocacy, and public health.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The program is invested in Boston Medical Center&#8217;s commitment to provide \u201cexceptional care without exception,\u201d which includes intentionally addressing the health and wellness inequities faced by people due to discrimination by race, ethnicity, poverty, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability and stigmatizing illness. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Preventive Medicine<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"> <\/span>The mission of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medfellowship\/preventive-medicine-training-at-boston-university-medical-center\/\">Preventive Medicine Training Program<\/a> is to: <em>Train highly motivated primary care physicians to serve as public health practitioners, clinicians, advocates, and researchers prepared to innovate responses to social determinants of health needs, low health literacy, and health disparities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The program offers two different tracks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medfellowship\/immigrant-and-refugee-health-preventive-medicine-track\/\"><span>Immigrant &amp; Refugee Health Track<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medfellowship\/community-prevention-and-maternal-health-equity-track\/\"><span>Community Prevention &amp; Maternal Health Track<\/span><\/a> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We provide continuing medical education support to all GIM faculty, including weekly Grand Rounds.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/care\/\">Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit<\/a> supports over a dozen programs that inform clinical and public health practice and policy to improve the lives of people with substance use disorders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Section of General Internal Medicine (GIM) encompasses a wide range of clinical, educational, and research activities focused on providing high-quality care, educating the next generation of clinicians and leaders, and generating knowledge to advance general internal medicine.
