I’m also interested in medical education and am looking forward to teaching medical students and residents both in the clinic and on the wards. I attended Albany Medical College and completed my Internal Medicine residency in Cambridge Health Alliance’s primary care program, focusing on advocacy and care for vulnerable populations. Personal and clinical experiences continually drew me toward caring for older adults and addressing systemic vulnerabilities, so I am thrilled to join BMC for geriatrics training and be surrounded by mission driven colleagues and mentors. I was born and raised in Jordan and spent some summers in Russia. I completed medical school at Al-Balqaa Applied University, where I met my wife. I have always had an interest in hematology and oncology, and I knew this was the path I would take after residency. On a random night shift, my senior—who is now an academic geriatrician—introduced me to geriatric oncology. The philosophy of this field captured my attention, leading me to explore its progress in the era of targeted and personalized therapy. I later connected with the Cancer Aging Research Group (CARG) and spoke with leaders and innovators in the field, which confirmed my true path and direction toward geriatric hematology. I have a strong interest in delirium, pain management, drug toxicity, falls, and frailty. I am very grateful to Boston Medical Center for their combined geriatric and hematology/oncology fellowship, which allows me to provide care to older adult patients while focusing on my interests in this understudied population. It has only been a week, but my program has already made me feel at home, surrounded by a new family. Outside of work, I love coffee and coffee science, photography, and going for long walks with my wife.

2025-2026

Natalie Perez-Mendez, MD
Email: Natalie.Perez-Mendez@bmc.org

Hi! One aspect that continues to amaze me about BMC is the enthusiasm and dedication of the faculty. This was evident during my interview and has become even more apparent now that I am part of the team. As both an academic and safety-net hospital, BMC provides a perfect blend of educational resources and diverse clinical exposure.

The high retention rate of fellows staying on as attendings speaks volumes about the supportive environment at BMC, which fosters the growth and development of its fellows. The combined geriatrics and hematology-oncology programs offer a unique and comprehensive training experience. I completed medical school at Father Muller Medical College in India. While researching for observerships and research opportunities, my mentors introduced me to geriatric oncology, which was just budding in India then. I was fortunate to work with Geriatric Oncologists during my rotations in the US in 2019 which further sparked my interest in pursuing it as a career. I completed my residency training and a PGY-3 chief year at South Brooklyn Health in Brooklyn. Training at a city hospital, I dealt with patients of various nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds, particularly society’s marginalized sections, which was rewarding and enhanced my clinical acumen. Boston University has a similar patient profile, given that it is the largest safety net hospital in the New England area, furthermore, since it is an academic program, the fellows have the opportunity to train under experts in the field. On my interview day, I was impressed by the warm, welcoming and genuinely kind faculty members who truly cared about the fellows’ success. The program leadership ensured that the program would fit with my career goals and provided incredible mentorship early on at the start of the fellowship. It’s not a surprise that many graduated fellows have stayed on to join as faculty at Boston University. I am truly blessed to have matched at this program which will train me in Geriatrics, Hematology and Oncology, which is exactly the career pathway I have in mind and look forward to the next four years here!
